Cabled jumper, age 1-2years, chest 21", suitable for boy or girl
I don't normally explain why I design patterns, but this one was extra special. I made this jumper for a little boy, Chester. He hasn't had the easiest start to life and still has a feeding tube. His mum wanted a jumper that would be easy to get on and off and would accommodate the tube, hence the buttoned opening on the shoulder.
The Chester Jumper is a knitted sweater designed for infants aged 1-2 years. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a cozy, cable-detailed jumper with classic proportions. The finished garment features a 21-inch chest measurement and 12-inch length, with 8-inch sleeves, making it an ideal size for toddlers during their first two years.
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create visual interest and structure. The pattern utilizes cable knitting, a foundational technique where stitches are crossed over one another using a cable needle to create twisted, rope-like textures. The jumper incorporates multiple cable variations, including C5B (cable 5 back), C5F (cable 5 front), and C8B (cable 8 back), which are worked throughout the design for decorative effect.
Additional techniques include rib knitting for the cuff and waistband sections, which creates an elastic, fitted finish. The pattern also demonstrates increases using the m1 (make one) method, where a horizontal loop is picked up and worked into the back of the stitch to add stitches seamlessly. The jumper is constructed using the flat knitting method, working back and forth in rows rather than in the round.
The Chester Jumper pattern incorporates the following essential stitches:
The Chester Jumper requires approximately 200 grams of Stylecraft Special Double Knit yarn, a medium-weight yarn ideal for creating garments with good stitch definition. Double knit yarn is versatile and works well for both smooth stockinette sections and textured stitch patterns like cables and moss stitch.
Two sizes of needles are required: 3.25mm needles for the ribbed cuff sections and 4mm needles for the main body. The pattern specifies a tension of 24 stitches and 32 rows to 10 centimeters when working double moss stitch on 4mm needles, ensuring proper sizing and garment drape.
Additional tools needed include a cable needle for managing cable stitches and a stitch holder for temporarily securing stitches during construction. These basic supplies are standard equipment in any knitter's toolkit and enable the creation of this charming toddler garment.
