Product Description
Asymmetric striped cardigan with shawl collar, age 1-2years, chest 22”, suitable for boy or girl
I don’t normally explain why I design patterns, but this one was extra special. I made this cardigan for a little boy, Chester. He hasn’t had the easiest start to life. One arm hasn't developed properly and he still has a feeding tube. His mum wanted a cardigan that would accommodate the tube, hence the shawl collar, and the asymmetric design disguises the differences between his arms.
Chester Cardigan by Carol's Creations
What is Being Made
The Chester Cardigan is a knitted cardigan designed for babies and toddlers, sized for 1-2 years with a finished chest measurement of 22 inches. This project from Carol's Creations is an intermediate-level knitting pattern that combines classic construction techniques with decorative cable stitch details.
Craft and Technique Overview
This is a knitting project that employs fundamental garment construction methods. The cardigan begins with a ribbed edging worked on smaller needles to create elasticity and structure, then transitions to larger needles for the main body fabric. The pattern demonstrates essential shaping techniques including increases and decreases to achieve proper fit for a toddler-sized garment. Cable stitches are incorporated as decorative elements, requiring the use of a cable needle to create twisted, three-dimensional texture.
Stitches Used
- Ribbing: Alternating knit and purl stitches (k1, p1) create an elastic edge that stretches and recovers, essential for cuffs and garment edges
- Stocking Stitch: The primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows, producing a smooth, classic appearance on the right side
- Cable Stitches: C6B (cable 6 back) and C6F (cable 6 front) techniques involve slipping stitches onto a cable needle, crossing them over working stitches, and knitting them in a new order to create twisted rope-like textures
- Decreases: K2tog (knit 2 together), k2togtbl (knit 2 together through back loop), and p2tog (purl 2 together) reduce stitch counts for shaping
- Increases: Inc (increase) techniques add stitches where needed for garment expansion
Materials and Tools
This cardigan is worked in Stylecraft Special DK yarn, a medium-weight yarn suitable for detailed stitch definition. The pattern requires approximately 100 grams of the main shade with 25 grams each of five additional colors (labeled A through E), allowing for colorwork or contrast detailing throughout the design. Two needle sizes are essential: 3.25mm needles for the ribbed sections and 4mm needles for the main body fabric. A cable needle is required to work the cable stitch elements. The tension specification of 22 stitches and 30 rows per 10 centimeters in stocking stitch on 4mm needles ensures proper garment sizing and fit.
Pattern Structure
The right front section begins with a cast-on of 30 stitches and establishes a knit-purl ribbed pattern over 10 rows using the smaller needles. After transitioning to the larger needles and main shade yarn, the pattern alternates between knit rows and patterned rows featuring the k3, p3 repeat sequence. Cable crosses are introduced within this structured repeat, with rows 1-16 establishing the foundational pattern that repeats throughout the garment construction.
