Product Description
The first cherry buds we see each year are a reassurance that spring is not just a thing of our imagination. They are a promise of warmer days coming soon, and seeing them always makes me believe in magic again. Pick up needles with some lovely yarn and then, row by row, watch little buds coming to life on your very own pair.
These socks are an addition to my line of designs created to be worn at home and enjoyed as a dear treat. Maybe they are not especially necessary or practical, but who said everything has to be?
- The socks are knitted from the top down. - There are directions for stitch distribution for both the magic loop and the DPNs. - The pattern has both the written row-by-row instructions and the charts. - The heel is of a classic construction with a heel flap and a gusset. - Both the heel flap and the toe are knitted with the addition of slipped stitches to create reinforced fabric.
Cherry Bud Socks by Ksenia Naidyon / Life Is Cozy
Project Overview
Cherry Bud Socks are an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed to create a decorative pair of home socks featuring delicate cherry bud stitch details. This downloadable PDF pattern combines practical sock construction with charming botanical motifs, offering knitters the opportunity to watch small buds come to life row by row as they progress through the project. These socks are part of a collection specifically designed to be worn and enjoyed at home as a special treat, prioritizing comfort and aesthetic pleasure over everyday practicality.
What Is Being Made
The Cherry Bud Socks are a pair of fingering-weight socks featuring decorative cherry bud stitch patterns. The design celebrates the arrival of spring through its botanical theme, with the stitch work creating visual representations of cherry buds that develop as you knit. The pattern accommodates various sock lengths, with yarn requirements up to 450 yards or 410 meters depending on your chosen length.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level pattern employs standard sock knitting techniques combined with decorative stitch work. The cherry bud motifs are created through stitch patterning that becomes increasingly visible as rows accumulate. The pattern utilizes a gauge of 32 stitches and 48 rows over 4 inches or 10 centimeters, which is typical for fingering-weight sock construction. Knitters will work with stitch markers to track pattern repeats and maintain proper stitch placement throughout the sock.
Yarn and Materials
Cherry Bud Socks are designed for fingering-weight yarn in either 3-ply or 4-ply construction, though sport-weight yarn is also suitable. The pattern recommends using solid, semi-solid, or kettle-dyed yarn to best showcase the stitch pattern details. The sample socks featured in the pattern were knitted using Drops Fabel Uni Color, a superwash wool and polyamide blend (75% superwash wool, 25% polyamide) in color 102. Each skein contains 1.75 ounces or 50 grams with 224 yards or 205 meters of yardage; two skeins were used for the sample.
Notions and Tools Required
- Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats
- Stitch holder (optional) for holding stitches
- Sock blockers for finishing and shaping
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming
Design Philosophy
The Cherry Bud Socks embody a philosophy that celebrates the non-essential elements of crafting. Designer Ksenia Naidyon created these socks as a reminder that handmade items do not need to serve a purely practical purpose to be worthwhile. The cherry bud theme connects to the seasonal joy of spring's arrival, transforming a functional garment into a wearable work of art that brings comfort and delight to the maker and wearer alike.
