Charlotte - Feather and Fan Bootees and Mittens by Jennifer Lee
What is Being Made
The Charlotte pattern is a coordinated set of bootees and mittens designed for newborns and infants. This downloadable knitting pattern includes four size options to fit babies from newborn through 9 months old. The bootees are sized to fit feet ranging from 7cm to 10cm (approximately 2¾ to 4 inches), while the mittens are sized to fit wrists from 12cm to 15cm (approximately 4¾ to 6 inches). This makes Charlotte an ideal welcome gift for a new baby, combining both footwear and hand coverings in one coordinated design.
Techniques and Construction
The Charlotte bootees and mittens are constructed using a two-stage knitting technique. The pieces begin with a feather and fan lace pattern, which creates an elegant, openwork design characteristic of traditional lace knitting. Following the lace section, the garments transition into stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which provides a smooth, classic knit fabric for the main body of each piece. This combination of techniques creates visual interest while maintaining the beginner-friendly difficulty level. The pattern is rated as Easy, making it accessible to knitters new to lace work.
Stitches Used
The Charlotte pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginners:
- Knit stitch (K) - the basic foundation stitch
- Purl stitch (P) - used in combination with knit to create stocking stitch
- Yarn forward (yfwd) - creates the openwork eyelets characteristic of feather and fan lace
- Slip stitch (sl) - used for shaping and stitch manipulation
- Pass slipped stitch over (psso) - a decrease technique that creates the decorative lace pattern
- Knit two together (tog) - another decrease method for shaping
Materials and Specifications
The Charlotte pattern requires minimal materials, making it economical and quick to complete. Only one 100g ball of Lincraft DK 8ply yarn is needed for the entire bootees and mittens set, regardless of size selection. The yarn specified provides 266 meters of yardage per 100g ball. Knitters will need a pair of 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8 or US size 6) and a wool needle for sewing seams. Additionally, 192 to 228 centimeters of narrow ribbon (76 to 88 inches, depending on size) is required, likely for finishing edges or adding decorative ties.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) over stocking stitch when using 4.00mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is important for ensuring the bootees and mittens fit properly across the four available sizes. The pattern acknowledges that yarn quantities may vary between individual knitters and different yarn types, providing flexibility for substitutions while maintaining the DK weight specification.
