Product Description
Gender neutral with an amazing fit, the Charlie Vest is a must for your handmade wardrobe. The Charlie Vest is constructed in two flat pieces and then sewn together. The ribbing is stitched to the bottom, sleeves and collar once the the two pieces are attached. Each size has a slightly different bobble motif. This piece could easily be made without the bobbles if you would like a plain vest. If you decide to do this, replace all bobble stitches with half double crochet stitches. Both models wear size 3-4.

What Is Being Made
The Charlie Vest is a crocheted sleeveless top designed as a beginner-friendly project. This garment is crafted using DK weight yarn and a 4.00mm crochet hook, making it an accessible introduction to vest construction for crocheters new to the craft.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This vest pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The construction utilizes straightforward shaping methods that build confidence while creating a wearable finished piece. The pattern incorporates textural elements through specialized stitches that add visual interest to the garment without requiring advanced skills.
Stitches Used
- Half Double Crochet (hdc) — The primary stitch used throughout the vest, forming the main fabric base with a gauge of 17 stitches and 14 rows per 10cm x 10cm (4 x 4 inch) square
- Single Crochet (sc) — Used for finishing edges and creating refined seams
- Chain Stitch (ch) — Foundation and structural element for building the vest
- Slip Stitch (sl st) — Used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
- Bobble Stitch (bo) — A textural stitch that adds decorative dimension to the design
- Back Loop Only (BLO) — A technique applied to specific stitches for creating ribbed or textured effects
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Charlie Vest is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn category that creates a fabric with excellent drape and wearability. The pattern was tested using Paintbox Yarns Simply DK in Light Caramel, a warm neutral colorway. Yarn requirements vary by size; refer to the pattern's yarn chart for the specific yardage needed for your desired finished measurements.
Essential tools include a 4.00mm (U.S. G/6) crochet hook or the size required to achieve proper gauge, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming pieces together if necessary.
Gauge and Fit
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies a gauge of 17 stitches and 14 rows equals 10cm x 10cm (4 x 4 inches) in half double crochet. Crocheting a gauge swatch before beginning ensures your finished vest will meet the intended dimensions.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner difficulty project, the Charlie Vest introduces fundamental crochet concepts while producing a polished, wearable garment. This pattern is ideal for crocheters building their skills and expanding their project repertoire beyond basic blankets and scarves.
