Change of Direction Shawl by Marija Korac
What Is Being Made
Change of Direction is an asymmetric knitted shawl designed by Marija Korac. This one-size-fits-all shawl features a wingspan of approximately 170 cm (67 inches) and is inspired by life's unexpected turns and the positive transformations that can result from shifting direction. The shawl combines structured eyelet work with delicate netting, creating visual interest and texture throughout the piece.
Design and Construction
The shawl is constructed in two distinct sections. The body of the shawl is worked using repeating lines of eyelets, which create an open, lacy appearance characteristic of modern shawl design. The finishing section transitions into a netting stitch pattern that frames the entire perimeter of the shawl. An i-cord edge is worked all around the shawl, providing a polished, defined border that prevents curling and adds structural integrity to the finished piece.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques suitable for advanced beginners:
- Eyelet stitches: Repeating lines of eyelets create an open, decorative lace effect throughout the body of the shawl
- Netting stitch: A traditional openwork stitch used in the finishing section for a refined, mesh-like appearance
- I-cord edging: A tubular knitted cord worked around the entire perimeter to frame and finish the shawl
- Asymmetric shaping: The shawl's asymmetrical construction creates dynamic visual movement and interest
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Change of Direction shawl is worked in fingering weight yarn, specifically 100% merino wool. The pattern requires 2 skeins totaling 200 grams (7.06 ounces) with a yardage of approximately 770 meters (840 yards combined). The original photographed model was created using Malabrigo Mechita in color number 712, Selva, which provides special visual effects through the yarn's characteristics and color depth.
Needles and Notions
The shawl is worked on 2.75 mm (US size 2) needles, appropriate for fingering weight yarn. Additional materials recommended for this project include scissors for weaving in ends, a tapestry needle for finishing, and a row counter to track progress through the repeating stitch patterns.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as suitable for advanced beginners. While the fundamental techniques are accessible to knitters with basic experience, the combination of eyelet work, netting stitch, and i-cord finishing requires familiarity with intermediate shaping and stitch manipulation techniques.
