Ceò Knitted Cowl by Liz Corke

What Is Being Made

Ceò is a textured knitted cowl designed to be worked flat before being joined in the round. The name comes from Scottish Gaelic, meaning mist, and the design celebrates the soft grey colorway that evokes misty mornings in early spring. This cowl is crafted to provide warmth during transitional seasons when there is still a chill in the air. The finished cowl features a top circumference of 64 cm (25 inches), making it a versatile accessory suitable for various head sizes and styling preferences.

Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques that make it both engaging and accessible. The cowl is worked flat on circular needles before being joined in the round, a method that allows knitters to work with ease before completing the final seam. The pattern features a mesh lace design that extends throughout the piece, creating an elegant, airy texture. A signature design element is the Picot Bind-Off, which adds a feminine flourish to the finished edge and has been carefully engineered to extend the mesh lace pattern right to the edge of the cowl. Blocking after completion is recommended to achieve the correct gauge and finished dimensions.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Ceò cowl showcases a Speckled Rib stitch pattern as its primary textural element. The pattern features a really easy repeat, making it perfect for relaxing knitting that allows the piece to progress quickly. The mesh lace component creates visual interest and lightness, while the ribbed sections provide structure and definition. The combination of these stitches results in a fabric with both texture and drape, suitable for a cowl that sits comfortably around the neck and shoulders.

Yarn and Materials

  • Yarn: 300 meters (330 yards) of Eden Cottage Yarns Carlisle Fingering in Winter Berries colorway. This yarn is 100% Merino in a single ply construction, with approximately 436 yards per 100 grams, making it a 4-ply weight yarn ideal for creating delicate, detailed stitch definition.
  • Needles: 4 mm (US 6) circular needles, 60 cm (24 inches) in length, appropriate for working flat and then in the round.
  • Notions: 3 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points, plus a yarn needle for sewing in ends after completion.

Gauge Information

The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 52 rows in 10 cm (4 inches) when working the Speckled Rib stitch flat and measured after blocking. While gauge is noted as not essential to the project's success, differences in individual gauge may affect the amount of yarn required and the final size of the completed cowl. Knitters are encouraged to swatch and adjust needle sizes as needed to achieve consistent results.
