Cataleya Hat by Helen Stewart
Project Overview
The Cataleya Hat is a slouchy knit design inspired by the headwear worn by the protagonist in the film Colombiana. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a relaxed, comfortable hat using minimal yardage, making it an excellent choice for gift-giving or a quick personal project. The design features a lacy chevron pattern that adds visual interest while maintaining the hat's casual aesthetic.
What Is Being Made
A two-size slouchy hat designed to fit head circumferences of 20"-23" (Medium) or 23"-25" (Large). The finished hat measures 18" (18.5") in circumference at the brim and 22.5" (23.5") at the widest point when blocked and unstretched. The total height from the base of the brim to the top-center of the crown is 9" (9.5"), creating the characteristic slouch silhouette.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs lacy chevron stitch work as the primary decorative element. The construction uses circular knitting on circular needles, which is a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments. The pattern requires working in the round, a standard method for hat construction that eliminates the need for seaming. The chevron lace pattern adds texture and visual movement while maintaining breathability in the fabric.
Needles and Tools
- 3mm (US 2.5) circular needles, 100cm (40") long for the ribbed cuff and initial rounds
- 4mm (US 6) circular needles, 40cm (16") long for the main body of the hat
- 4mm double-pointed needles (DPNs) or 4mm circular needles (80-100mm length) for crown decreases
Yarn Requirements and Materials
This efficient pattern requires only ½ skein of sock weight yarn, approximately 200m/220yds per 50g. The pictured samples showcase two premium yarn options:
- Posh Yarn Miranda Sock: A luxury blend of 70% baby alpaca, 20% silk, and 10% cashmere with 400m/440yds per 100g skein
- Madelinetosh Tosh Sock: 100% Merino Superwash
Sock weight yarn (also classified as 4-ply) is ideal for this project, providing the necessary drape and stitch definition for the lacy chevron pattern while creating a lightweight, comfortable finished garment. The minimal yardage requirement makes this pattern economical and perfect for using up partial skeins from other projects.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills in circular knitting and are comfortable working with lace stitches and decreases. The chevron lace pattern requires attention to stitch placement and yarn-over sequences, making it suitable for knitters beyond the beginner stage who are ready to incorporate textured stitch patterns into their work.
