Cat Nap Tea Cosy by Alison Davis

What is Being Made

The Cat Nap Tea Cosy is a knitted insulator designed to fit a 2.5 pint stainless steel teapot. This original Cosypot design by Alison Davis creates a warm, protective covering that keeps tea hot while adding a decorative element to the kitchen or dining table.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. The tea cosy is constructed using a straightforward approach suitable for beginners, making it an accessible project for those new to knitting or looking for a quick, satisfying make.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Stocking Stitch (SS) – the main fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic knitted appearance
  • Knit (K) – basic knit stitches forming the foundation of the fabric
  • Purl (P) – purl stitches used in alternation to create stocking stitch
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog) – a decrease technique that reduces stitch count for shaping
  • Purl Two Together (P2tog) – purl-side decrease method
  • Slip, Knit, Pass Slipped Stitch Over (SKPO) – an alternative decrease technique for shaping
  • Knit Front and Back (KFB) – an increase method that adds stitches by working into both the front and back of a single stitch
  • Slip 1 (SL1) – slipping a stitch onto the right-hand needle without working it
  • Bind and Tie (B&T) – the finishing method where yarn is threaded through remaining stitches, pulled tight, and tied off, leaving a tail for sewing seams

Pattern Structure and Gauge

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 25 stitches and 34 rows per 10 centimeter square in stocking stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished size to fit the specified teapot. The cosy begins with a cast-on of 36 stitches and includes 4 rows of knitting before transitioning to stocking stitch for 29 rows, creating a structured, well-proportioned garment.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This tea cosy is crafted using double knitting (DK) weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides warmth and durability. The pattern requires 50 to 60 grams of DK yarn in the main shade (MS). A distinctive feature of this design is that two strands of double knitting yarn are worked together to create a thicker, warmer fabric with enhanced insulating properties. This doubling technique elevates the yarn to a bulkier working weight while maintaining the delicate characteristics of DK yarn.

Needles and Tools

The pattern is worked on 4.5mm knitting needles, which are appropriately sized for working with two strands of DK yarn held together. The construction requires making two identical pieces that are subsequently sewn together to form the complete cosy.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner-friendly project, the Cat Nap Tea Cosy uses only basic knitting techniques and straightforward shaping. The simple stitch repertoire and clear construction method make this an ideal project for knitters developing their fundamental skills or for experienced crafters seeking a quick, satisfying knit.
