Product Description

The main teacosy is created using two strands of DK together of 4.5mm needs. All other pieces are created with a single strand of DK on 3mm needles. It is knitted flat and seamed. I embroidered the detail using simple embroidery stitches but you could use buttons, beads or other embellishments.

Cat Nap Tea Cosy for a 2 Cup Teapot

Project Overview

The Cat Nap is an original knitted tea cosy design by Alison Davis, specifically sized to fit a 2 cup teapot. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a charming and functional accessory that keeps tea warm while adding a decorative touch to any kitchen. The design demonstrates intermediate-level knitting skills and uses a combination of knitting techniques to achieve both structure and visual interest.

What is Being Made

This pattern produces a complete tea cosy—a fitted fabric cover designed to insulate a 2 cup teapot. The cosy features a main body along with additional knitted components that work together to create the finished piece. The design is an original creation from the Cosypot collection, reflecting thoughtful construction for both warmth and aesthetic appeal.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Two-Strand Knitting: The tea cosy body is knitted using two strands of DK yarn held together simultaneously, creating a thicker, warmer fabric ideal for insulation purposes
  • Increases: The pattern employs both KFB (knit into front and back of stitch) and M1 (make one stitch by picking up the bar between stitches) techniques to add stitches where shaping is needed
  • Decreases: K2tog (knit two stitches together) and P2tog (purl two stitches together) are used to decrease stitches, while PSSO (pass slipped stitch over) provides additional shaping options
  • Slip Stitch Technique: SL1 (slip stitch) is used to move stitches without knitting them, allowing for seamless transitions and refined edges
  • Bind Off Method: The pattern uses a B&T (bind and tie) finish, where yarn is threaded through remaining stitches, pulled tight, and tied off, leaving a tail for sewing components together

Stitches Used

  • Stocking Stitch (SS): The primary stitch used throughout the cosy, creating a smooth, classic knitted fabric with a neat appearance on the right side
  • Knit Stitch (K): The fundamental stitch forming the basis of the stocking stitch pattern
  • Purl Stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create the reverse side of stocking stitch and add textural variation where needed

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for DK (double knitting) weight yarn in a main shade color. The tea cosy body is constructed using two strands of DK yarn held together, while all other components are worked using single DK yarn. Knitting is worked on 3mm needles, which are appropriately sized for DK weight yarn and create the correct gauge for proper fit on a 2 cup teapot.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with shaping techniques, increases, decreases, and multi-component assembly. The combination of two-strand knitting for the body and single-strand knitting for details provides a good challenge without being overwhelming.
