Product Description

A slightly fitted classic lady's cardigan in a casual design. The pattern is in elastic ribbed stitches - purl and knit. The rib bottom body has a split at both sides giving the model an elegant look. The long ribbed cuffs are a bit wide. The in-set sleeves with the shaped sleeve-cap give the garment a super fit. The model is worked flat from right front to left front giving no side seams. The neck band as well as the front bands are narrow with buttonholes for small buttons down along the right front. Detailed written pattern. Interesting work. This model is suitable for all ages and shapes.

Skill level required from 1 (beginner) to 5 (advanged): 3.

The measurements throughout the pattern are given in cm as well as inches.

Length: can be adjusted as you wish - explained in the pattern.

For the original black cardigan I have used the merino wool Castelbuono from domoras.

Other wool suitable: ROWAN Fine Tweed, PATONS Merino Extrafine 4-ply, MONDIAL Decati', Malarigo Sock.

CASTELLANA Woollen Cardigan

What is Being Made

The CASTELLANA is a woollen cardigan designed by domoras.com as a downloadable knitting pattern. This garment represents an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for crafters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex construction techniques. The cardigan features button closures and includes detailed shaping for neckbands and sleeves.

Primary Craft and Construction Method

This pattern is created entirely through knitting, utilizing traditional hand-knitting techniques to construct a wearable cardigan. The design incorporates multiple foundational knitting approaches to create texture, structure, and functional closures throughout the garment.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

  • Stocking Stitch (Stockinette Stitch): The primary fabric construction method, created by knitting all stitches on right-side rows and purling all stitches on wrong-side rows. This produces the smooth, flat fabric characteristic of classic knitwear.
  • Reverse Stocking Stitch: An inverted variation where right-side rows are purled and wrong-side rows are knitted, creating a textured reverse appearance when desired.
  • Garter Stitch: Formed by knitting all stitches on both right-side and wrong-side rows, producing a ridged, textured fabric often used for borders and structural elements.
  • Ribbed Knit Pattern: A structured pattern combining knit 2, purl 1 sequences in alternating rows (knit to knit, purl to purl on subsequent rows), creating the elastic, fitted ribbing commonly found on cuffs, waistbands, and necklines.

Techniques Employed

The CASTELLANA cardigan incorporates several essential knitting techniques:

  • Casting On Using the Knotted Edge Thumb Method: A foundational technique where double wool is held on the left hand, with the right-hand wool wrapped around the needle between each cast-on stitch. This method creates a secure, neat edge suitable for garment construction.
  • Knitting Up Stitches Along Edges: A critical technique for adding neckbands, sleevebands, and sleeves worked from top to bottom. The pattern specifies knitting up stitches from the right side of the work to ensure proper construction and finished appearance.
  • Buttonhole Construction: The pattern includes a specific method for creating buttonholes by casting off stitches in the desired button size, then casting on the same number of new stitches. On the following row, the first new stitch is worked together with the preceding "old" stitch, and the last new stitch is worked together with the following stitch, preventing unwanted holes in the fabric.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The CASTELLANA is designed to be worked in 4-ply woollen yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape for cardigan construction. The 4-ply weight allows for detailed stitch patterns and ribbing to display clearly while maintaining the warmth and durability characteristic of wool fibre. Standard knitting needles appropriate to the yarn weight are required to achieve proper gauge and fabric consistency throughout the garment.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, the CASTELLANA cardigan is designed for knitters who have mastered basic knitting fundamentals and are prepared to work with multiple stitch patterns, edge techniques, and garment shaping. The combination of stocking stitch, ribbing, garter stitch, and functional buttonhole construction makes this an ideal project for developing advanced knitting skills.
