Pattern 9612 from Stylecraft presents two distinct children's cardigan designs knitted in Stylecraft Jeanie yarn. The pattern covers a broad size range, fitting children aged 18 months through 10 years, with chest measurements spanning 51–56 cm (20–22 in) up to 71–76 cm (28–30 in). Both designs are worked in an aran/worsted weight yarn, making them a satisfying and relatively quick knit while still offering enough detail to engage an intermediate-level knitter. The finished garments are practical, cosy layering pieces ideal for everyday wear through the cooler months.
The first design featured in pattern 9612 is a classic round neck cardigan, a timeless silhouette that works beautifully for both boys and girls across the full age range covered by the pattern. The construction is traditional and straightforward, beginning at the lower back and working upward in separate pieces before seaming.
The Back is cast on using 4mm needles and the thumb method, with stitch counts ranging from 74 stitches for the smallest size up to 94 stitches for the largest. The actual measurements given in the pattern provide a helpful reference for fit:
The lower border of the back begins with a 2×2 rib, a classic and elastic edging stitch that helps the cardigan hug the body neatly at the hem and cuffs. The rib is formed as follows:
These two rows are repeated to form the rib, which is worked for a total of 6 rows before a decrease row is worked to shape the transition into the main body fabric. The decrease row uses work 2 together decreases spaced evenly across the row — for example, working rib 13 or 14 stitches between each decrease — to reduce the stitch count neatly before changing needle size. After the decrease row, knitters change to 5mm needles and proceed with the main body pattern, which includes a decorative border section worked immediately above the rib.
The use of a needle size change from 4mm to 5mm is a well-established technique in knitwear construction: the smaller needle creates a tighter, firmer rib that holds its shape, while the larger needle allows the main fabric to drape and breathe more naturally. This approach is particularly effective with aran and worsted weight yarns like Stylecraft Jeanie, which have enough body to show stitch definition clearly.
Pattern 9612 includes a second cardigan design alongside the round neck version, giving knitters a choice of two different styles within the same pattern booklet. Both designs are worked in Stylecraft Jeanie at the same aran/worsted weight and share the same size range of 18 months to
