Cardigan & Waistcoat in Stylecraft Soft Baby Easy Stripes DK & Bambino DK – Pattern 10166

This Stylecraft pattern 10166 is a beginner-friendly knitting pattern offering two easy knit designs for babies and young children: a classic cardigan and a waistcoat (vest). Both garments are sized to fit ages birth through 5 years, covering chest sizes from 41 cm to 61 cm (16 in to 24 in), making this a versatile pattern that grows with your little one. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, ideal for knitters who want to get started straight away.

Design 1: Baby Cardigan

Overview

The cardigan is a sweet, practical layering piece designed for everyday wear from newborn upward. It features a structured body with a neat ribbed hem, a textured stitch pattern on the main body, and set-in sleeves. Full length measurements range from approximately 24 cm (9½ in) for the smallest size up to 42 cm (16½ in) for the largest, with sleeve lengths from 15 cm (6 in) up to 29 cm (11½ in). Actual chest measurements span 49 cm to 68 cm across all five sizes.

Construction & Techniques

  • Cast-on method: The thumb method cast-on is specified, a beginner-friendly technique that creates a neat, slightly elastic edge — well suited to baby garments.
  • Ribbing: The lower body begins with 10 to 12 rows of 1×1 rib worked on 3.25 mm needles, providing a tidy, stretchy hem band.
  • Shaping: A decrease row is worked after the ribbing to reduce the stitch count before moving to the main body pattern. Decreases use k2tog (knit two together), a simple right-leaning decrease that is ideal for beginners.
  • Main body pattern: Stitches are increased to 4 mm needles for the body. The main fabric uses a K1 Below stitch pattern — a technique where you knit into the stitch one row below the current stitch on the needle — creating a subtle, woven-look texture with good depth and warmth without extra bulk. This stitch is worked on right-side rows alternated with knit-back wrong-side rows.
  • Slip stitch edge: A sl1 (slip 1) at the beginning of every row creates a clean, professional selvedge edge throughout the garment, making seaming and finishing much neater.

Stitches Used

  • 1×1 Rib (k1, p1 alternating) for hem and cuffs
  • K1 Below — knitting into the stitch in the row below for a textured, layered fabric
  • K2tog — standard right-leaning decrease for shaping
  • Slip stitch selvedge — sl1 at row beginnings for clean edges
  • Stocking stitch elements within the construction

Design 2: Baby Waistcoat

Overview

The waistcoat is a sleeveless version that makes a charming standalone garment or a practical layering piece over long-sleeved tops. It shares the same size range — birth to 5 years — with full length measurements from 23 cm (9 in) up to 41 cm (16 in). Like the cardigan, it is rated as a beginner knit, making it an excellent project for those new to baby garment construction.

Construction & Techniques

  • The waistcoat follows the same foundational construction approach as the cardigan, using 3.25 mm needles for the ribbed hem and 4 mm needles for the body.
