The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and covers sizes Small to Large.

For every King Cole pattern purchased, a donation is made to the Pink Ribbon Foundation, so buying this pattern also supports a charitable cause.

About King Cole Riot Chunky

All pieces in this pattern are worked in King Cole Riot Chunky, a self-striping or variegated chunky-weight yarn that produces vibrant, multicoloured results without the need for complex colour-changing techniques. Because the yarn does the decorative work on its own, even a simple stitch pattern produces a visually striking finished fabric — making it especially well-suited to beginner knitters. The chunky weight also means projects knit up quickly on 6mm knitting needles.

The Cape

Construction and Design

The cape is the centrepiece of this pattern. It is constructed in two identical panels — the back and the front are worked alike — which simplifies the knitting process considerably and makes this an accessible project for those newer to garment construction. The symmetrical approach means there is no need to track separate right and left instructions, reducing the chance of error.

Sizing and Cast-On

Each panel begins by casting on 109, 117, or 125 stitches depending on the chosen size, giving the cape its generous, sweeping silhouette at the lower edge. The large stitch count at the start creates the characteristic flared shape of a cape, which then tapers toward the neckline through a series of carefully placed decreases.

Stitches and Techniques

The primary stitch pattern throughout the cape is 1x1 Rib, which is defined in the pattern's special abbreviations. This rib is worked as follows:

  • Right-side rows: *K1, P1, repeat from * to last stitch, K1
  • Wrong-side rows: P1, *K1, P1, repeat from * to end

This alternating knit-and-purl structure creates a fabric with a pleasing texture and a degree of natural elasticity, which helps the cape drape well around the shoulders. The rib pattern is maintained consistently throughout the shaping sections, so knitters must keep the continuity of pattern in mind as they work the decreases.

Shaping

The shaping of the cape is achieved through centre decreases, where 2 stitches are decreased at the centre of the work at regular intervals. The decrease schedule is structured in phases:

  • An initial section establishing the pattern and beginning the centre shaping
  • A phase of 22 rows with decreases worked in the centre on the next and every following alternate row, reducing the stitch count to 77, 85, or 93 stitches
  • A further phase of 44 rows with decreases worked in the centre on the next and every following 4th row, bringing the stitch count down to 55, 63, or 71 stitches
  • The panel is then cast off in pattern

This graduated decrease schedule gives the cape its smooth, tapered shape from hem to shoulder, and working the decreases at the centre rather than the edges creates a neat, symmetrical line of shaping that is visible as a design detail on the finished garment.

The Accessories

Alongside the cape, pattern 4714 includes a selection of coordinating accessories. Based on the product attributes, these comprise a hat, mittens, and a scarf, all worked in the same King Cole Riot Chunky yarn and on 6mm knitting needles. Knitting the accessories in the same
