Cannon Beach Blanket – Afghan Knitting Pattern in Tahki Yarns Hatteras & Hatteras Splash

The Cannon Beach Blanket is a beautifully structured, square knitted afghan designed by the Adventure Du Jour Designers for Tahki Yarns. Finished at a generous 38" x 38" (96.5 cm x 96.5 cm), this one-size throw is crafted entirely in Garter Stitch and worked flat, making it an approachable yet satisfying project for intermediate knitters. The design's quiet sophistication comes from its two-color mitered border construction, which frames a solid central block with elegant, angled stripes that radiate outward from each corner.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a single, square knitted blanket or throw suitable for home décor, cozy lap use, or as a thoughtful handmade gift. The finished piece has a classic, textured appearance thanks to the all-over Garter Stitch fabric, while the color-blocked mitered border adds visual interest and a polished, intentional finish. The clean geometry of the design evokes the coastal, relaxed aesthetic suggested by its name.

Construction and Techniques

The blanket is worked flat in two distinct stages: a large central square block followed by a mitered border picked up and worked directly onto the edges of that block. This construction method is a hallmark of well-engineered afghan design, as it eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, continuous fabric from center to edge.

  • Main Block: The central square is cast on using the Long-Tail Cast-On method — a popular technique prized for its neat, elastic edge — and worked for 160 rows, producing 80 Garter ridges. The finished block measures approximately 31" x 31" before the border is added.
  • Mitered Border: The border is worked by picking up stitches along the edges of the central block and working increases at each corner on every wrong-side row. This creates the characteristic mitered, diagonal line at each corner. The increases are worked using the kfb (knit front and back) technique, which is simple and creates a neat, subtle increase stitch.
  • Color Striping in the Border: The border alternates between Color A (Hatteras in Fog) and Color B (Hatteras Splash in Lava Rock) in structured stripe sequences, adding tonal depth and a subtle organic variation to the outer frame of the blanket.
  • Bind-Off: Stitches are bound off purlwise and loosely, which is an important finishing detail that preserves the elasticity of the Garter Stitch edge and prevents the border from pulling in.

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch — the sole stitch pattern throughout the entire blanket, achieved by knitting every row on both the right side and wrong side. Garter Stitch is beloved for its reversibility, its natural elasticity, and its satisfying ridged texture. Because it looks identical on both sides, the pattern helpfully suggests placing a removable marker on the right side to keep track of orientation.
  • kfb (Knit Front and Back) — a simple one-stitch increase used at the corner markers in the border section to shape the mitered angles.
  • Pick Up and Knit — used along the selvedge edge of the main block to begin the border, picking up one stitch per Garter ridge for an even, clean transition.
  • Purlwise Bind-Off — a finishing technique that keeps the final edge soft and flexible.

Materials and Yarn

The pattern calls for two coordinating yarns from Tahki Yarns, both in the chunky weight category and made from 100% organic cotton:

  • Tahki Yarns Hatteras5 hanks in Color #14 Fog (Color A). Each hank is 100g/3.5oz and 109 yards/100 meters.
  • Tahki Yarns Hatteras Splash3 hanks
