Candy Corn Scrubby in Red Heart Scrubby Sparkle (LW5390)

This free downloadable knitting pattern by Michele Wilcox for Red Heart produces a charming candy corn-shaped scrubby measuring 7" x 7¼" (18 x 18 cm). Inspired by the classic Halloween treat, the finished scrubby is color-blocked in three distinct sections — white, orange, and yellow — mimicking the iconic candy corn silhouette from point to base. It's a fun, seasonal knit that's equally practical for use in the bath, on dishes, or for any everyday scrubbing task.

What Is Being Made

The project is a single knitted dishcloth and scrubby shaped like a candy corn. It is worked from the pointed tip upward, growing wider with each section through strategic increases. The triangular, color-blocked design makes it a great quick knit for Halloween gifting, seasonal kitchen décor, or practical household use.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for RED HEART® Scrubby Sparkle™ (Art. E851), a worsted-weight specialty yarn available in 3 oz (85g), 78-yard (71m) balls. Three colors are used:

  • Color A: 8001 Marshmallow (white)
  • Color B: 8260 Orange
  • Color C: 8215 Lemon (yellow)

One ball of each color is required. RED HEART® Scrubby Sparkle™ is specifically designed for scrubby projects — its unique fiber construction provides gentle scrubbing texture, while the Sparkle variation adds a light-hearted shimmer that makes this seasonal project extra fun. A yarn needle is also needed for finishing.

Needles

Susan Bates® Knitting Needles in 4 mm (US 6) are recommended. Since gauge is not critical for this pattern, knitters are encouraged to use any needle size that feels comfortable and produces a fabric they are happy with.

Techniques and Construction

The scrubby is knitted flat, beginning at the narrow pointed tip and increasing outward to form a triangle. Construction is straightforward and beginner-friendly, making this an excellent project for newer knitters looking to practice shaping. The piece is worked in three color sections that are changed at set row intervals, with yarn tails trimmed and woven in at the end.

  • Cast on: 7 stitches with Color A (Marshmallow)
  • Color A section: Rows 1–16, increasing every other row to 23 stitches
  • Color B section: Rows 17–36 (Orange), continuing increases to 43 stitches
  • Color C section: Rows 37–55 (Lemon), knitting every row without further increases
  • Bind off: Row 56, all stitches bound off loosely

Stitches Used

  • Garter Stitch — the entire scrubby is worked by knitting every row, creating a dense, textured, reversible fabric that is ideal for scrubbing tasks
  • M1 (Make 1 Increase) — a special stitch used throughout the shaping rows; worked by lifting the strand between needles onto the left-hand needle and knitting through the back loop to prevent a hole
  • Knit (K) — the foundational stitch used throughout
  • Bind off — worked loosely on the final row to maintain the shape and drape of the finished piece

Finishing

Finishing is minimal and beginner-friendly. Using a yarn needle, all tails and loose ends from color changes are woven in securely. No seaming is required, as the scrubby is worked as a single flat piece.

Gauge

The recommended gauge is 18 stitches and 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Garter Stitch. As noted in the pattern, gauge is not critical
