Product Description

I designed this lovely jacket for my granddaughter ❤. It is very girly so I decided to make it in pink but you could choose any colour of your liking. I used James C. Brett baby 4ply yarn for the project. You will need 2 balls to complete it. The original size is 3-6 months but it can easily be adjusted to different size by increasing / decreasing the number of cast on stitches and making more/less rows. Some pictures are also included in the pattern.

This pattern is made for intermediate knitters but I believe an advanced beginner who is already familiar with knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing and yarn over can try it and achieve perfect result ❤.

What you will need is a set of circular needles, a cable needle, scissors, darning needle, some beads (optional), buttons, stitch markers and 2 balls of yarn.

So let's begin the project and make our little ones warm and cosy ❤

Happy knitting!

Candy Baby Jacket by Sugar Lambs

What is Being Made

The Candy Baby Jacket is a knitted cardigan designed for infants, created by independent designer Sugar Lambs. This intermediate-level project produces a charming baby garment featuring decorative details and a classic fitted construction suitable for everyday wear.

Craft and Primary Technique

This design is created using the knitting craft. The project employs fundamental knitting techniques combined with more advanced construction methods. The garment is worked in separate pieces—the back, two front panels, and two sleeves (five pieces total)—which are then strategically joined at the armpits before continuing with raglan shaping worked upwards toward the neckline. This modular construction approach allows for better shaping control and is a hallmark of intermediate knitting projects.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

The Candy Baby Jacket incorporates several key stitches and techniques:

  • Picot Edge: A decorative, delicate edging created through a combination of knit and purl rows with yarn overs and knit-two-together decreases. This creates a scalloped, ornamental finish typically used on the lower edge of baby garments for visual appeal.
  • Garter Stitch: A fundamental stitch created by knitting every row, producing a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. This stitch provides structure and is often used for borders and ribbing alternatives.
  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary fabric stitch, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic appearance.
  • 6-Stitch Cable: A twisted stitch pattern that adds visual interest and texture to the design, requiring a cable needle to temporarily hold stitches while crossing them over one another.
  • Selvedge Stitch: A neat edge treatment worked on every row by slipping the first stitch and purling the last stitch, creating clean, finished side edges ideal for seaming.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Candy Baby Jacket is designed to be worked in James C. Brett Baby 4ply yarn, a lightweight yarn weight that is ideal for delicate baby garments. The 4ply weight creates a fine, smooth fabric appropriate for infants.

Needles and tools required include:

  • Circular needles in 2mm size (the primary needles for working the main fabric)
  • Spare needles (for holding stitches during construction)
  • Cable needle (for working the 6-stitch cable pattern)
  • Darning needle (for weaving in yarn ends and seaming pieces together)
  • Stitch markers (for tracking pattern repeats and construction points)
  • Buttons (for the cardigan closure)
  • Beads (optional embellishment)
  • Scissors

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 28 stitches by 36 rows over 10 centimeters in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the finished jacket fits properly, as baby garments require precise measurements for comfort and safety.

Construction Details

The Candy Baby Jacket begins with the back panel, which is cast on with 60 stitches plus 2 selvedge stitches for a total of 62 stitches. The back piece starts with the decorative picot edge—a multi-row sequence involving purl, knit, and yarn-over rows that creates the ornamental lower border. Once the picot edge is complete, stitches are picked up and the main body is worked upward. The front panels and sleeves are constructed using the same foundational techniques. After all five pieces are completed separately, they are joined at the armpits, and the raglan shaping is worked upwards, creating the characteristic sloped shoulder line of a raglan-sleeve garment. This construction method provides excellent fit and is particularly suitable for growing babies who need comfortable, well-proportioned garments.
