Product Description
This is a big cuddly koala cushion, quick to knit in chunky yarn. This koala is made in blue shades, but you can make a traditional grey koala if you prefer. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the koala is knitted in acrylic yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Calvin the Koala Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
Project Overview
Calvin the Koala is a cuddly knitted toy cushion designed by Amanda Berry. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a large, soft stuffed koala figure using chunky weight yarn. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is ideal for crafters looking to make a quick, satisfying toy project with bold, modern color options.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a big, huggable koala cushion toy. The designer offers flexibility in color choices—while the pattern features a contemporary blue color scheme using Dark Blue, Light Blue, Bright Blue, Dark Green, Light Green, and White yarns, crafters can substitute traditional grey shades for a classic koala appearance. The finished toy is stuffed with fiberfill to create a three-dimensional, cuddly companion.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
As an intermediate-level project, Calvin the Koala incorporates fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The pattern uses essential knitting stitches and shaping methods, including:
- Knit stitch (k) – the basic foundation stitch
- Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease technique used for shaping
- Knit into front and back (kfb) – an increase method for expanding stitch counts
These techniques allow crafters to shape the koala's head, body, ears, and limbs while working with the forgiving bulk of chunky yarn, which knits up quickly and creates a soft, plush texture.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for 100% acrylic chunky weight yarn (also known as bulky or 12 ply). The recommended yarn is Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky, a 100% acrylic option available in a wide range of colors. Approximately 50g of yarn is needed in each of five coordinating shades. Total yarn requirement is up to 250g across all colors.
Needles and Notions: Crafters will need a pair of 5.5mm (US size 9) single-pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm. Additional supplies include:
- A 250g bag of toy filling (polyester fiberfill) for stuffing
- Domed black buttons for the koala's eyes
- 2 metres of black DK weight yarn for embroidering fine details
- A darning needle or tapestry needle for seaming pieces together
Pattern Characteristics
This downloadable PDF pattern is designed for quick completion thanks to the chunky yarn weight, which creates fast stitch progression. The use of acrylic yarn makes Calvin the Koala an affordable, durable, and easy-care toy suitable for children and collectors alike. The combination of knitted construction with embroidered details and button eyes adds personality and dimension to the finished toy.
