Product Description

I had this ball of Knit Picks Chroma Fingering sitting in my stash for a year, waiting for the right project which never came. However, I noticed the colorway matched the colors of one firbolg cleric named Caduceus, from Critical Role and I was inspired to design a dice bag! With budding blossoms from the garden and trailing vines, this bag is perfect for slow color changing yarns such as Chroma. Pair with a couple of complementary colors and you get a beautiful bag to store and carry your gaming dice with you!

This is a fairly easy colorwork pattern with no long floats to carry. You can do this pattern with three colors of yarn, or two if you wish, it's all up to you! Long color changing yarn will look amazing as the main color of this bag.

Laid flat the final dimensions of the bag will be 6” (15 cm) tall by 4.5” (11 cm) wide.

As with all colorwork, I highly recommend that you wet block your finished bag and lay flat to dry.

Caduceus' Blooms Dice Bag

What is Being Made

Caduceus' Blooms Dice Bag is a knitted container designed to store and carry gaming dice. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a functional drawstring bag featuring decorative floral motifs inspired by the character Caduceus from Critical Role. The finished bag measures 6 inches when laid flat, making it an ideal size for transporting a standard set of polyhedral dice while maintaining portability.

Design Inspiration and Colorwork

Designer Deborah Anne West created this pattern specifically to showcase slow color-changing yarns, particularly those with multiple distinct color sections like Knit Picks Chroma Fingering. The design features budding blossoms from the garden and trailing vines as its primary decorative elements. The pattern is optimized for yarns where the natural color transitions create visual interest without requiring complex color work techniques, though the designer recommends pairing the main yarn with complementary colors to enhance the final aesthetic.

Knitting Techniques Used

This project employs colorwork knitting as its primary technique, allowing knitters to incorporate multiple yarn colors to create the floral and vine motifs. The pattern accommodates two different construction methods for modern knitters: traditional double-pointed needles (DPNs) or the magic loop technique using a circular needle. This flexibility allows knitters to choose their preferred method for working in the round, which is essential for creating a seamless cylindrical bag structure.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, the colorwork gauge of 8 stitches by 9 rows per inch indicates the use of stockinette stitch as the foundation, which is the standard base for colorwork patterns. The bag is constructed in the round, creating a seamless tube that is subsequently closed at the top to form the dice bag. Finishing involves sewing in yarn ends with a tapestry needle to complete the project.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This project requires 80-85 yards of combined yarn in fingering or sock weight (4-ply), distributed across 2 or 3 different colors. The designer specifically mentions Knit Picks Chroma Fingering as an ideal yarn choice due to its color-changing properties, though any fingering or sock weight yarn in complementary colors will work. Knitters will need either 4-5 size 2.75mm (US 2) double-pointed needles or one 32-inch circular needle for magic loop knitting, along with a tapestry needle for finishing and a stitch marker to track rounds.

Difficulty Level and Gauge Considerations

Rated as an intermediate project, this pattern assumes knitters have experience with basic techniques and are comfortable working colorwork patterns and in the round. The gauge specification of 8 stitches by 9 rows per inch is critical for achieving the correct finished dimensions. Knitters are advised to adjust needle size if they knit tighter or looser than average to ensure proper gauge, as this directly impacts the final bag size and functionality.
