Product Description
The Cables & Colors fingerless gloves were created as a part of a knit design challenge earlier this year where designers needed to combine 2 knit techniques in a finished object. My gloves won third place!
This pattern is charted and is knit in the round. My knit techniques used for this design are Fair Isle and Cables. The pattern is currently written for one size, but can easily be edited for a larger size by adding extra stitches before and after the cable sections, and cen be decreased in size by removing a purl stitch from before and after the cable sections.
These gloves will fit a women's hand from teen to adult, and are 8 inches from hem to hem.
This pattern went through several rounds of tech editing and several test knitters before publishing.
Cables & Colors Fingerless Gloves by Erin White
Project Overview
Cables & Colors is an intermediate-level knitting pattern for fingerless gloves designed by Erin White. These versatile gloves are sized to fit teen to adult women's hands and measure 8 inches in length from hem to hem. The fingerless design makes them ideal for crafters who need hand warmth while maintaining dexterity for detailed work or everyday activities.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a pair of fingerless gloves featuring decorative cable stitching and color work. The gloves are constructed to provide coverage from the wrist to just below the knuckles, leaving the fingers exposed for functionality. The design combines both technical cable work and contrast colorwork to create visual interest and texture.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Cable knitting: The pattern incorporates cable crosses, including 2/2 right cross (RC) and 2/2 left cross (LC) stitches that create the signature twisted rope-like texture
- Color work: Contrast color is worked throughout the design using two distinct colorways
- Circular knitting: Gloves are worked in the round using either circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPN)
- Stockinette stitch: The base fabric is worked in stockinette stitch, providing a smooth, classic knit surface
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches including knit (k) and purl (p) stitches as the foundation. Cable crosses are the signature stitch element: the 2/2 right cross involves slipping 2 stitches onto a cable needle, holding it to the back, knitting the next 2 stitches, then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle to create a cable that crosses left to right. The 2/2 left cross follows a similar technique with the cable needle held to the front instead. Stitch markers are optional notions that help track pattern repeats.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn Weight and Yardage: The pattern calls for sock weight yarn, which is a fingering-weight yarn suitable for fine, detailed knitting. The project uses approximately 266 total yards of yarn (140 yards of main color and 126 yards of contrast color), requiring only 30 grams of yarn total.
Yarn Specifications: The pattern was designed and tested using Arrowhead Fibers Basic Sock Base, a high-quality sock yarn containing 75% Superwash Merino wool and 25% Nylon. This blend provides durability, softness, and easy care. The colorways shown in the pattern photographs are Spunky Brewster and Evergreen, demonstrating how different color combinations affect the finished gloves.
Needles and Notions: Knitters will need US 1.5 (2.50 mm) needles and US 2 (2.75 mm) needles, available in either circular or double-pointed needle sets of 5. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable crosses throughout the pattern. Additional notions include stitch markers (optional but helpful) and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 15 stitches by 20 rows per 2-inch square when knit flat with US 2 (2.75 mm) needles in stockinette stitch without color work. Achieving proper gauge is important for ensuring the finished gloves fit correctly. The gloves are designed to fit teen to adult women's hand sizes.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated at intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle cable work and color changes. The combination of cable crosses and contrast colorwork requires attention to pattern instructions and familiarity with working in the round, but the straightforward construction makes it an achievable project for developing knitters.
