Product Description

This sampler throw took inspiration from many sources, including my own imagination. Many 'advanced' techniques are used but, like anything, once you know how to do them they are actually not that difficult.

It was a joy to both design and knit. I hope you have as much fun making it as I did!

Made in 5 sections plus left and right borders, the throw only requires vertical seams. Smaller throws can be made by just knitting adjacent sections or a rectangular subset of blocks.

Each of the 32 closed cable stitch patterns and the borders have full written instructions and are charted.

Gauge is not critical as long as each section can be blocked to the same height and a consistent width so using wool or yarn with a high wool content is recommended.

The sample was made using 6 colours. Alternatively, it could be a really colourful stash buster. A blank layout and yarn estimates for each block/border is provided on the last page for those of you who want to try out your own colour schemes.

Cabled Isles Throw by Helen Gipson

What is Being Made

The Cabled Isles Throw is a sampler blanket designed by Helen Gipson that combines multiple cable stitch patterns into a single cohesive throw project. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a substantial throw blanket featuring closed cables and various advanced cable techniques arranged in distinct blocks with coordinating borders. The design draws inspiration from multiple sources and offers crafters the opportunity to explore complex cable work within a structured, manageable project format.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting pattern emphasizes closed cable techniques that, while appearing advanced, become accessible once the fundamental methods are mastered. The pattern includes detailed instruction on closed cable increases and decreases, which are specialized techniques for manipulating cable stitches at garment edges. The throw is constructed as a sampler, meaning it incorporates multiple distinct stitch patterns across different blocks, allowing knitters to practice and master various cable variations within a single project. The pattern provides both written stitch instructions and charted patterns to guide knitters through each section.

Stitches Used

The Cabled Isles Throw features an extensive array of cable stitches organized into separate pattern blocks. The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and detailed written instructions for each stitch pattern used throughout the throw. Closed cables form the primary focus, with the pattern dedicating specific pages to explaining closed cable increases and decreases as foundational techniques. Additional stitch patterns are presented through both written format and charted instructions, allowing knitters to follow their preferred method of pattern reading. The sampler structure means multiple cable variations and complementary stitches work together to create visual interest and textural depth across the finished throw.

Materials

The Cabled Isles Throw requires approximately 2464 yards (2240 metres) of aran weight yarn. The sample featured in the pattern was knitted using Garnstudio Drops Alaska Aran/10 ply, a 100% wool yarn that provides approximately 77 yards (70 metres) per 50-gram ball. The sample colorway uses two colors: Colour 1 in Grey Pink (40) totaling 5 balls or 250 grammes, and Colour 2 in shade 02 O. The pattern includes a blank layout page with yarn estimates for each block and border section, enabling knitters to customize their own color schemes and calculate yardage requirements for alternative colorway choices. Knitters will need appropriate needles for aran weight yarn to achieve the specified gauge.
