Product Description
There are two patterns, one for the hat and one for the scarf and either can be made. The hat is knitted with the yarn held double to make it nice and chunky. Pom poms are optional. The Yarn used is a standard guage DK Yarn and I have chosen Alpaca as it is lovely and soft.
Cable Hat and Lacy Scarf Set by Monica Russel
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer Monica Russel provides instructions for creating a coordinated hat and scarf set. The designs showcase intermediate-level knitting techniques, making them suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more complex stitch patterns and construction methods.
Lacy Scarf
What is Being Made: A delicate lace scarf featuring an openwork pattern that creates visual interest while maintaining breathability. The finished scarf measures 28cm in width and 155cm in length after blocking, making it a generous accessory suitable for various styling options.
Techniques Used: The scarf employs fundamental lace knitting techniques including yarn overs to create deliberate holes in the fabric, slip-stitch decreases for shaping the lace motifs, and knit-purl combinations to build texture and definition. The pattern uses garter stitch borders (knit stitches on both sides) to frame the lace pattern and provide structural stability to the edges.
Stitches Used:
- Knit stitch (K) for foundation and border work
- Purl stitch (P) for textural variation within the lace pattern
- Yarn over (yf and yon) to create deliberate openings in the lace
- Slip stitch through back of loop (sl 1 tbl) for refined decreases
- Pass slipped stitch over (psso) for paired decreases
- Knit two together (k2tog) for right-leaning decreases
- Purl two together (p2tog) and purl two together through back loop (p2togtbl) for left-leaning decreases
Materials: The scarf requires 4 balls of UK Alpaca Double Knit yarn (50g per ball, approximately 112m per ball), worked on 5mm needles. The yarn weight is classified as DK (Double Knit), and the pattern specifies a tension of 20 stitches and 32 rows measured over 10 x 10cm when worked in the lace pattern. The scarf begins with a cast-on of 54 stitches.
Cable Hat
What is Being Made: A coordinating hat designed to complement the lacy scarf set. The pattern references a 3cm circumference of card or a pom-pom, suggesting the hat may feature a pom-pom embellishment at the crown, though complete instructions are not fully detailed in the provided content.
Materials and Construction: The hat is constructed using the same UK Alpaca Double Knit yarn and 5mm needles as the scarf, ensuring visual and textural cohesion throughout the set. The intermediate difficulty level indicates the hat incorporates cable stitches or similar textured techniques alongside the foundational knitting skills demonstrated in the scarf pattern.
Pattern Abbreviations and Terminology
The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including RS (right side), WS (wrong side), st(s) for stitch(es), and rep for repeat. Understanding these abbreviations is essential for following the row-by-row instructions accurately.
Suitable For
This hat and scarf set is ideal for intermediate knitters seeking to develop their lace knitting skills while creating a practical, wearable accessory set. The combination of garter stitch borders with complex lace patterning provides an excellent learning opportunity for managing tension and maintaining pattern consistency across multiple rows.
