Product Description
These cute cable pants match the Cable Baby Bonnet. These are fun to knit and adorable to wear! Like the bonnet, these pants begin with knitting a straight cable band. Stitches are then picked up around the band to knit the pants. These are seriously too cute!
The yarn chosen for this design is soft and perfect for babies! Smooth on their skin.
These pants are knit from the top down and are completely seamless. So, there are very few tail ends to weave in at the end and no sewing!
A perfect pattern for that little baby in your life!
Cable Baby Pants Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
The Cable Baby Pants are a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Lara Simonson that creates fitted trousers for infants and toddlers. This pattern is available in five different sizes: newborn, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, and 2T, making it versatile for growing babies. The design features decorative cable details that add visual interest to classic baby pants.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques. The waistband is knit as a separate strip before stitches are picked up along the waistband edge to begin the body of the pants. Cable work is central to the design, requiring the use of a cable needle to create the signature textured pattern. The pattern uses both circular needles and double-pointed needles (dpns) to construct the garment in the round, which is a common method for knitting seamless baby clothing.
Stitches Used
The Cable Baby Pants pattern incorporates cable stitches as the primary decorative element. Specific cable techniques include C4F (cable 4 front), which involves placing 2 stitches on a cable needle, holding them to the front of the work, knitting the next 2 stitches from the left needle while passing behind the cable needle, then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle. The pattern also uses C4B (cable 4 back), which follows a similar process but holds the cable needle to the back of the work instead. Additional stitch abbreviations referenced include sm (slip marker), dm (drop marker), and pdm (place divide marker), which are used for pattern management and shaping.
Materials and Yardage
This pattern calls for Millamia naturally soft aran yarn, which is composed of 100% wool. The yardage requirements vary by size: newborn requires 175 yards (160 meters), 3 months requires 200 yards (180 meters), 6 months requires 250 yards (225 meters), 12 months requires 325 yards (290 meters), and 2T requires 400 yards (360 meters). The pattern specifies 4.5 mm (US size 7) circular needles in 16 to 20 inches for the main construction, along with four 4.5 mm (US size 7) double-pointed needles for working smaller sections. A cable needle is also required for executing the cable stitches throughout the design.
Pattern Overview
The Cable Baby Pants pattern is offered as a free, downloadable PDF format, making it accessible to knitters of all backgrounds. As an intermediate difficulty project, it is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to work with cables and circular needle construction. The pattern provides detailed instructions with size variations clearly marked, allowing knitters to easily identify which measurements and stitch counts apply to their chosen size.
