Product Description

She watched with childlike wonder as the yellow-white butterfly seemed to float across her yard and finally land among the lilacs. Tiptoeing quietly through her yard, inching closer with each step, she got near enough to observe the butterfly’s delicate wings and count it’s six legs before it flew off again.

The Cabbage Butterfly Socks are a toe-up sock with a delicate lace butterfly motif that “floats” throughout the sock. These socks capture the spirit of childhood wonder, while at the same time being feminine and delicate. Knit these up in a pale yellow or green speckled yarn to embody the Cabbage Butterfly. Or, perhaps, you have the perfect blue yarn for Adonis Blue Butterfly or some orange and black for a Monarch Butterfly. Find your own inspiration!

Pattern includes two parts. The first is the pattern and the second part is a step-by-step picture tutorial to create the lace butterflies.

Cabbage Butterfly Socks by Spivay Song Knits

Project Overview

The Cabbage Butterfly Socks are an intermediate-level knitting project designed to capture the delicate beauty of butterflies in wearable form. Inspired by the imagery of a yellow-white butterfly landing among lilacs, these socks combine functional footwear with artistic lace detailing. The design celebrates childhood wonder through a feminine and delicate aesthetic that appeals to knitters seeking both technical challenge and creative expression.

What Is Being Made

These are custom-designed socks featuring an integrated lace butterfly motif that appears to float throughout the leg and foot. The pattern is worked toe-up, meaning construction begins at the toe and progresses toward the cuff. The butterfly design serves as the primary visual element, making these socks suitable for display as well as everyday wear.

Design Inspiration and Customization

The Cabbage Butterfly Socks draw inspiration from real butterfly species, with suggestions for yarn color choices that evoke different varieties. Knitters are encouraged to select pale yellow or green speckled yarn to represent the Cabbage Butterfly itself, or to choose alternative colorways such as blue for an Adonis Blue Butterfly or orange and black for a Monarch Butterfly. This flexibility allows each maker to personalize the project according to their own inspiration and available materials.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

As an intermediate-level project, the Cabbage Butterfly Socks employ several key knitting techniques:

  • Toe-up construction: The socks are knit from the toe upward to the cuff, a method that allows for precise fit and the ability to try on the sock during the knitting process
  • Lace work: The butterfly motif is created using lace stitches, which involve yarn overs and decreases to form openwork patterns that create the delicate, floating appearance of butterfly wings
  • Knitwise stitches: The pattern uses knitwise techniques, where stitches are worked as if to knit rather than purl, affecting how stitches are mounted and worked
  • Make 1 increases: The pattern includes M1L (make 1 left) increases, a method for creating new stitches that leans directionally and maintains the integrity of the lace design

Yarn and Materials

The Cabbage Butterfly Socks are designed for 4-ply yarn weight, also known as fingering weight. This lightweight yarn is ideal for socks, providing durability while maintaining a comfortable fit inside shoes. The 4-ply weight allows the lace motif to be clearly visible and delicate in appearance. Knitters should select yarn colors that inspire them personally, whether that means traditional butterfly-inspired hues or unexpected creative choices. Standard sock needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight are required for construction.

Pattern Format and Designer

The Cabbage Butterfly Socks pattern is available as a downloadable PDF from independent designer Spivay Song Knits, created by Ann Luckmann. The pattern is formatted for personal use and includes sizing information, with options including at least a medium and large size. The downloadable format allows knitters to access the complete instructions, stitch abbreviations, and construction details immediately upon purchase.

Skill Level Considerations

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace work and toe-up construction. The combination of these techniques requires understanding how to read lace charts, manage yarn overs and decreases, and work comfortably with the toe-up method. Knitters comfortable with basic sock construction and simple lace patterns will find this project an enjoyable step forward in their skills.
