Product Description
This is a corner to corner crochet version of my Bicycle chart, this version includes a c2c picture chart and a colour-coded written version for those who prefer to follow worded instructions. I have also included a "how to corner to corner crochet" guide for those who might not have crocheted an image. The guide also has a border option for those who may want to add a decorative edge to their finished blanket.
The finished blanket will be a different size depending on the yarn you use (using 4ply gives you a lovely baby blanket size)
Sizes - 4ply: 60x70cm, DK: 80x90 cm, Aran: 90x100cm, Chunky: 100x110cm
C2C Bicycle Corner to Corner Blanket
Project Overview
This is a corner to corner (C2C) crochet blanket featuring a bicycle design, created by designer EJHeywood from Instarsia. The project combines colorwork and graphical design to produce a finished blanket with a detailed bicycle motif worked from corner to corner using the popular C2C technique.
What Is Being Made
A decorative crochet blanket or throw with an integrated bicycle picture chart. The blanket is worked using the corner to corner method, which builds the piece diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner. The finished piece displays a bicycle design in multiple colors across a rectangular blanket format suitable for home décor or gifting.
Crochet Technique: Corner to Corner (C2C)
The corner to corner technique is an intermediate-level crochet method where the blanket is constructed diagonally, beginning at one corner and expanding outward until reaching the opposite corner. This technique is particularly effective for creating graphical designs and pixel-art style images, as it naturally translates picture charts into crochet fabric. C2C creates a dense, structured fabric that works beautifully for blankets and throws.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided materials, corner to corner crochet typically employs:
- Double crochet (dc) as the primary stitch, worked in a grid pattern
- Chain stitches (ch) for foundation and turning chains
- Color changes integrated throughout to follow the picture chart and create the bicycle design
The technique requires careful attention to color placement at each step to accurately reproduce the graphical design from the chart.
Picture Chart and Design
The pattern includes a detailed picture chart with numbered rows (1–82) and columns (1–39), creating a grid-based visual guide for the bicycle design. The chart uses color coding to indicate where specific yarn colors should be used throughout the project. This chart-based approach allows crocheters to follow the design systematically, row by row, ensuring accurate color placement and design reproduction.
Materials: Yarn and Fiber
This project uses DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn suitable for creating defined stitches and detailed colorwork. DK weight provides good stitch definition while remaining manageable for intermediate crocheters. The pattern calls for yarn in the following colors:
- Grey
- Black
- White
- Denim
- Camel
The specific yardage requirements are indicated as 1401 yards total, with individual color quantities: 160, 23, 42, and 90 yards distributed across the color palette.
Tools Required
Crocheters will need an appropriate crochet hook sized to work with DK weight yarn, typically a size H/8 (5mm) or I/9 (5.5mm) hook, depending on personal tension and desired fabric density. The hook size should be selected to create even stitches and maintain consistent tension throughout the colorwork sections.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty. While corner to corner crochet is accessible to those with basic crochet skills, the integration of multiple colors and the need to follow a detailed chart accurately requires intermediate-level attention to detail and color management. Crocheters should be comfortable with basic stitches, color changes, and reading graphical patterns before attempting this project.
Versatility and Alternative Uses
According to the pattern documentation, Instarsia charts are interchangeable and can be adapted for multiple crochet and knitting applications. While this particular chart is designed for corner to corner crochet, the same bicycle design can be translated to other crochet methods or knitting techniques, offering flexibility for crafters who prefer different construction approaches.
Pattern Source and Designer
This pattern is provided by Instarsia, an independent designer brand specializing in picture charts for fiber crafts. The designer, EJHeywood, offers additional resources, updates, and videos through the Instarsia website and social media channels, providing ongoing support for crafters working with Instarsia patterns.
