Product Description

This elegant scarf is inspired by the arches and domes of Byzantine architecture. It is made with motifs in one of 2 joining methods: the Continuous Crochet Motifs method, with less ends to weave in, or the traditional method of joining motifs. You choose which method you'd like to use.

The pattern includes written instructions for both joining methods, plus step-by-step photos for the continuous crochet motifs method and 2 crochet symbol charts: one for each of the joining methods.

You can customize the length by simply making and joining more or less motifs. The featured scarf is made with a sport weight yarn, but you could use a worsted weight or bulky weight yarn, if desired, for a wider scarf.

The scarf, as shown, uses approx 50 yds of Cherry Red, 45 yds of Orange, 150 yds of Black and 85 yds of Tea Leaf or Lime in Red Heart Lustersheen yarn. The round motifs measure 2 3/8” diameter. This is an intermediate-advanced pattern, depending on which motif joining method you choose.

Byzantine Scarf by Susan Lowman

What Is Being Made

The Byzantine Scarf is an intermediate to advanced crochet project designed by Susan Lowman that creates a finished accessory measuring approximately 5 1/2 inches wide by 58 inches long. This scarf is constructed using a motif-based approach, allowing crafters to build the piece through repeating geometric units that are either joined continuously or assembled using traditional joining methods.

Construction Methods

This pattern offers flexibility in assembly technique. Crafters can choose between two distinct approaches:

  • Continuous Crochet Motifs Method: This approach minimizes the number of yarn ends requiring weaving, streamlining the finishing process and reducing post-project cleanup work.
  • Traditional Motif Joining Method: This classical technique involves joining separate motifs together, which results in more yarn ends to weave in but offers a traditional construction experience.

Both methods are fully supported with complete instructions and symbol crochet charts included in the pattern, allowing crafters to select the approach that best suits their preferences and skill level.

Crochet Stitches and Techniques

The Byzantine Scarf employs fundamental crochet stitches to create its structure. The pattern utilizes single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), and double crochet (dc) stitches as core building blocks. Chain stitches (ch) form the foundation and connecting elements, while slip stitches (sl st) are used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between motif sections. The pattern also incorporates stitch spaces (sp) and loops (lp) as design elements within the motif construction.

Motif Structure and Gauge

The scarf is built from repeating motifs worked in rounds (rnds). The gauge specification indicates that motifs completed through rounds 1-3 measure 2 3/8 inches in diameter. When the full edging rounds are added, the finished motif expands to 3 3/4 inches in diameter. This gauge information is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions and ensuring proper fit and drape of the completed scarf.

Materials and Yarn

The Byzantine Scarf pattern calls for Red Heart Luster Sheen yarn, a 100% acrylic fiber available in 3.5 ounce skeins. The design uses sport weight yarn in a carefully coordinated four-color palette:

  • Cherry Red (#915) – 50 yards
  • Orange (#251) – 45 yards
  • Black (#2) – 150 yards
  • Tea Leaf (#615) or Lime (#620) – 85 yards

The total yardage requirement is approximately 330 yards of sport weight yarn distributed across these four colors, creating a vibrant, multi-colored finished piece.

Tools and Equipment

The pattern requires a Size F (3.75mm) crochet hook, or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge with your chosen yarn. A stitch marker is also needed to track round beginnings and maintain consistency throughout the motif construction process.

Skill Level and Complexity

Classified as intermediate to advanced, the Byzantine Scarf is suitable for crocheters with solid foundational skills. The intermediate-advanced designation reflects the motif-based construction method and the need to manage multiple colors and coordinate joining techniques. Crafters should be comfortable reading crochet charts and working with repeating pattern sequences before beginning this project.
