Product Description
Use oddballs from your yarn collection to make several sizes of these fun bowls. Embellish with buttons or beads if you like!
In-Depth Yarn Answers The yarns used in the first photo are Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Worsted for the tall one and the button bowl, and Nashua Creative Focus Worsted for the purple bowl with turquoise beads.
All but the tall one (in photos #1 & #2) had the same number of stitches on the same size needles, and the same person knit them. All were run through my washer hot wash cold rinse, two times…
When I made a bowl in Noro Kureyon, it took 3 trips through the wash and is still somewhat fluffy and softer than the rest (mine is the back bowl in the final photo). The size differences between bowls made of different yarns were vast, but all are useable and have good proportions.
Construction: Begun with stockinette rectangle worked flat briefly; completed in the round using a set of 5 double-pointed needles (4 holding, 1 working).

Project Overview
The Buttons and Beads Bowl is a quick and versatile knitting project designed to create decorative bowls from oddball yarn in your collection. This beginner-friendly pattern allows crafters to produce multiple sizes of functional or decorative containers, with optional embellishment using buttons or beads for added visual interest.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates knitted bowls suitable for use as decorative containers or gifts. The design produces two primary bowl styles: a smaller, taller bowl measuring approximately 4 inches in diameter by 4 inches in height, and larger, lower bowls ranging from 4 to 5.5 inches in diameter by 2.25 to 3.25 inches in height. The final dimensions vary significantly based on yarn choice, allowing crafters to customize their finished pieces.
Construction Technique
The Buttons and Beads Bowl employs a hybrid construction method that combines flat and circular knitting. The project begins with a stockinette rectangle worked flat on straight needles, then transitions to working in the round using a set of five double-pointed needles. This technique uses four needles to hold stitches while one needle actively works the stitches, a traditional method for seamless circular knitting.
Stitches and Stitch Work
- Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows when working flat, then knit rounds when working in the round
- The pattern works at approximately 16 stitches per 4 inches in stockinette stitch when worked in the round, though exact gauge is noted as not crucial to the project's success
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Buttons and Beads Bowl is designed to use small quantities of aran-weight or heavy worsted-weight yarn, making it an excellent stash-busting project. The pattern also accommodates doubled sport-weight yarn as an alternative. Important fiber content note: Only all-animal-fiber feltable yarns are suitable for this project. Superwash yarns and those containing significant synthetic or plant-fiber content will not felt properly and should be avoided.
Tools and Equipment
- Needles: One set of five size 10.5 US (6.5 mm) double-pointed needles, 7 inches in length
- Optional embellishments: Buttons or beads for decorative finishing
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it accessible to knitters new to circular knitting techniques. The straightforward stockinette stitch and flexible gauge requirements make it an ideal introductory project for learning to work with double-pointed needles.
