Materials Worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You’ll need three colours of yarn, I have used brown (1/4 of a 100 yard skein), oatmeal (1/8) and a bit of white for the muzzle. For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes. I crocheted a nose with a brown strand, split in half and used hook 2.5 mm (B US). You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads). Lopi colour numbers: 0867 and 1419 and 0051.
Bunsie is a small crocheted amigurumi-style polecat (ferret) toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk. This finished stuffed animal measures approximately 5.7 inches (14.5 cm) in height when made with the recommended yarn and tension. The pattern creates a cute, huggable plush toy suitable for children or as a decorative handmade gift.
Primary Craft: Crochet
This pattern uses fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners. The doll is worked in the round using spiral construction, a common method in amigurumi toy making. The designer recommends using a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round, moving it up as you progress through the pattern.
Color Changes: The pattern includes color work with detailed instructions for changing yarn colors. More complex color transitions are highlighted in color-coded text within the pattern for easy reference. All color changes are executed in the final loop of a stitch, ensuring the new color appears on the hook as you begin the next round.
While the PDF does not explicitly list every individual stitch, the pattern employs standard American crochet terminology throughout. Typical stitches for this type of amigurumi toy construction include single crochet, increases, and decreases worked in continuous rounds to shape the ferret's body, head, limbs, and facial features.
Yarn Weight: Worsted weight
Recommended Yarn: The designer strongly recommends using a fuzzy yarn for optimal results. The pattern was tested with Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool yarn that provides excellent texture and appearance for the finished polecat toy.
Tools: A crochet hook appropriate for worsted weight yarn is required. A stitch marker is recommended to track round progression.
The finished size of your crocheted polecat will vary depending on the yarn weight used and your personal crochet tension. For this reason, the designer recommends experimenting with eye size recommendations, as tighter or looser tension will affect the overall dimensions of the toy. Reading through each complete instruction line before beginning a round ensures proper color changes and stitch placement.
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or amigurumi toy making. The straightforward spiral construction and basic stitch techniques make it accessible while still producing an adorable finished result.
