Bunny Keychain Knitting Pattern by Cheryx
What is Being Made
This is a beginner-friendly knitting pattern for a small decorative bunny or rabbit keychain. The finished toy measures 6cm in height and 6cm in length, including the pom-pom tail, making it an ideal size for a key ring attachment. The design creates a cute, compact stuffed animal perfect for gifting or personal use.
Craft and Techniques
This pattern uses knitting as the primary craft method. The bunny is constructed by knitting all pieces flat (back and forth) on straight needles rather than in the round, which is ideal for beginners learning fundamental knitting techniques.
Key construction techniques include:
- Casting on: The pattern recommends using the long tail cast on method for all pieces, a foundational technique that creates a professional edge
- Seaming: Finished pieces are joined together using Mattress Stitch and Whip Stitch, essential techniques for creating seamless, polished seams in toy construction
- Embroidery: Facial features (nose and cheeks) are embroidered onto the bunny using contrasting yarn colors
- Assembly: The toy is stuffed with toy filling and finished with a pom-pom tail
Stitches Used
The pattern primarily utilizes stockinette stitch, the most fundamental knitting stitch. The gauge is 26 stitches and 34 rows per 10cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch. The pattern notes that tension does not need to be exact for this toy project, making it accessible for beginners who may still be developing consistent tension control.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Less than 10g of sport weight yarn in each color is required. The pattern specifies brown yarn (Brown 04 from Wishful Bird Baby of Ruyi Bird, comparable to Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn) for the bunny body, with black and red yarn from Yarn Art for embroidering facial features. The minimal yardage requirement makes this an excellent pattern for using yarn scraps.
Needles and Notions: A pair of 2.25mm straight knitting needles is used for all knitting. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends, sewing pins for holding pieces during assembly, toy filling (less than 10g), and a pom-pom for the tail. The pattern notes that pencils or similar objects can be used as forms to shape the ears.
