Bunny Bonnet by Simona Dan
What is Being Made
The Bunny Bonnet is a charming knitted hat designed for infants aged 6-12 months. This bonnet features a classic bunny-inspired silhouette with decorative ears and optional flower accents. The finished bonnet measures 6.5" x 6.5" with ears measuring 4.5" x 10", making it an appropriately sized accessory for babies in this age range.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This bonnet is constructed using the flat knitting method, meaning the pieces are knitted flat on straight needles and then sewn together to create the finished three-dimensional garment. The main body of the bonnet is worked in the moss stitch pattern, a classic textured stitch that creates visual interest and subtle dimension.
The pattern includes decreasing techniques to shape the back of the bonnet, using the K2tog (knit two together) decrease method. These strategic decreases are worked at regular intervals across multiple rows to create the proper fit and shaping for the back crown area. The edges around the bonnet opening and ears feature optional crochet finishing, which adds a refined, polished edge to the piece.
Stitches Used
- Moss Stitch: The primary stitch pattern, created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a checkerboard-like texture. Row 1 (right side) is worked as K1, P1 repeated to the end. Row 2 (wrong side) reverses this pattern, working the opposite stitch over each stitch as it faces you (knitting over purls and purling over knits).
- Knit Stitch (K): The fundamental knitting stitch used throughout the pattern
- Purl Stitch (P): The reverse of the knit stitch, used in combination with knit stitches to create the moss stitch texture
- Yarn Over (YO): A technique referenced in the pattern abbreviations for creating decorative elements
- K2tog (Knit Two Together): A decrease stitch used to shape the back of the bonnet by reducing stitch count
- Cast On (CO): The foundation method used to create the initial 44 stitches
Materials and Specifications
This pattern calls for Sirdar Temptation yarn in a chunky weight, with 90 yards required to complete the bonnet. The yarn weight and yardage make this a quick project suitable for intermediate knitters. US 9 (5.5mm) needles are used for the main knitting, with the gauge measured at 19 rows and 14 stitches over a 4-inch square. A crochet hook is needed for the optional edge finishing, though the pattern can be completed without this step if preferred.
Difficulty Level
This bonnet is rated as an intermediate project. While it uses fundamental stitches like knit and purl, the moss stitch pattern requires attention to stitch placement, and the decreasing sequence demands careful counting and shaping skills. The optional crochet finishing adds versatility for those with additional crochet experience, though the bonnet can be completed as a knit-only project.
