Product Description
bCrochet these incredibly warm mittens that have a wool lining made of “thrums”! These thrums are crocheted strategically into the mitten so that they provide an incredible layer of warmth and softness inside - the thrums will felt over time to become a fleece layer. These bulky mittens work up very quickly and look so adorable with the puffy hearts! I used Hue + Me yarn (bulky level 5) for the mittens and Fifty Fifty yarn (wool/alpaca blend) to create the thrums. The printable PDF is a total of 14 pages including the cover page and includes: the written adult and child size patterns (child size fits my daughters ages 6 and 8), the full step-by-step photo tutorial, and detailed tutorials for: how to create your own thrums, how to work a thrum stitch, and how to work an invisible decrease with a thrum.
Please note that this is an ad-free, beautifully formatted, and concise PDF version of a pattern that can be found for free, with ads, on my blog!
Bulky Thrummed Mittens by Stephanie Lau
Project Overview
These crochet mittens feature a traditional thrummed construction, a specialized technique that creates an exceptionally warm wool lining perfect for cold weather. The design combines chunky yarn with wisps of unspun wool roving to produce mittens with built-in insulation and a distinctive puffy aesthetic. Available in both adult and child sizes, these mittens work up quickly due to the bulky yarn weight, making them an ideal project for crafters seeking fast results without sacrificing warmth or style.
What Is Being Made
Bulky crochet mittens designed by Stephanie Lau that showcase the traditional thrummed mitten technique. The finished mittens feature puffy heart details and are available in two sizes: adult mittens measuring 10.5 inches (27 cm) long by 9.5 inches (24 cm) wide, and child mittens measuring 8 inches (20 cm) long by 8 inches (20 cm) wide. These mittens are constructed with a wool-lined interior created through the thrumming process, offering exceptional warmth and durability.
Crochet Techniques Used
The primary technique featured in this pattern is thrumming, a traditional method originating from Newfoundland and Labrador. This specialized technique involves crocheting wisps of unspun wool roving, called thrums, directly into the fabric as you work. The thrums are incorporated throughout the mitten construction to create a dense wool lining that provides superior insulation. Single crochet stitches form the foundation of the mitten structure, worked in continuous rounds to create a seamless, fitted garment. The pattern includes construction of puffy heart embellishments that add visual interest to the finished mittens.
Stitches and Stitch Details
- Single crochet (sc) – The primary stitch used throughout the mitten construction, worked in continuous rounds
- Thrummed single crochet – Single crochet stitches worked with wool roving thrums incorporated into each stitch for insulation
- Puffy heart details – Decorative elements added to enhance the visual appeal of the finished mittens
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for 120 grams (132 yards) of bulky level 5 yarn, with a recommended gauge of 10 stitches and 12 rounds equaling 4 inches in single crochet. A 5 mm crochet hook is used to work with the bulky yarn weight. The designer used Hue + Me in "Desert" by Lion Brand Yarn for the main mitten fabric. Additionally, 60 grams of wool roving is required to create the thrums that form the insulating lining. The pattern specifically recommends "Fifty Fifty Yarn" from the Lion Brand Collection, a super bulky yarn composed of 50% alpaca and 50% wool, which provides both warmth and durability.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches are straightforward single crochet, the thrumming technique requires practice and familiarity with incorporating wool roving into crochet stitches. Crafters should have foundational crochet skills before attempting this project, as the thrumming process adds complexity beyond basic stitch work. The pattern includes references to a step-by-step blog post to supplement the written instructions and provide additional guidance on the thrumming technique.
