Product Description

This hat is a quick project created with super bulky yarn.

The pattern includes instructions for both a beanie (pictured) and a roll-up brim version. Because the cables are reversible, the rolled up brim looks just the same as the outside of the hat!

When designing the hat, I used a superwash wool-blend yarn (WOOLADDICTS Fire by Lang). Superwash wool and wool-blend yarns often grow when blocked, so the gauge that I have indicated (12 sts/4”) was measured after blocking. This is important! If you are using a non-superwash wool or wool-blend, you will likely need larger needles than the US 11/8mm indicated in the pattern (all of this is written in notes in the pattern).

I have included links to the 3 Kittens Needle Arts YouTube channel within the pattern for video tutorials for: tubular cast on for 1x1 ribbing, tubular bind off for 1x1 ribbing, and tips on weaving in ends invisibly.

What is Being Made

The Brule Hat is a knitted beanie designed by Laura Rasmussen, available in two size options: approximately 17" circumference (stretching to 22") or 19" circumference (stretching to 25"). The pattern offers flexibility with two construction options: a brimless version or a version with a brim, allowing crafters to customize their finished hat according to personal preference.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs cable knitting as its primary decorative technique. The pattern features front cable work, which creates the textured, twisted appearance characteristic of cable-knit designs. The hat is constructed using circular knitting methods, worked in the round on circular needles and double-pointed needles to achieve a seamless, professional finish. Decreasing techniques are incorporated toward the crown to shape the hat and create a proper fit.

Stitches Used

The Brule Hat utilizes a focused selection of fundamental knitting stitches combined with cable work:

  • Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric structure
  • Purl (p) – used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and definition within the cable pattern
  • Front Cable (CF4) – a 4-stitch front cable created by slipping two stitches onto a cable needle, holding them to the front of the work, knitting and purling the next two stitches from the left needle, then working the stitches from the cable needle; this creates the characteristic twisted rope effect
  • Slip (sl) – used to move stitches between needles as needed for cable construction
  • Decrease stitches – including ssk (slip, slip, knit) and p2tog (purl two stitches together) to shape the crown

Materials and Gauge

The Brule Hat is designed for super bulky yarn weight, making it an excellent choice for quick completion. The brimless version requires approximately 75 yards (smaller size) or 90 yards (larger size), while the version with a brim requires approximately 110 yards (smaller size) or 120 yards (larger size). The pattern calls for US 11/8mm needles in both 16" circular and double-pointed needle formats, sized to obtain proper gauge. Additional materials include a cable needle for managing cable stitches, stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and a tapestry needle for finishing.

The specified gauge is 12 stitches per 4 inches in the cable pattern after blocking. The designer notes that this gauge measurement is taken post-blocking, as the original hat was created with superwash wool blend yarn, which tends to grow when wet blocked. Crafters using non-superwash yarns should be aware that their gauge and finished dimensions may differ slightly from the blocked measurements provided.
