Bronto and Steggy the Dino-Rawrs Applique Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

This downloadable crochet pattern from designer EverLaughter provides instructions for creating two adorable dinosaur appliques: Bronto and Steggy. These small crocheted dinosaur designs are perfect for embellishing garments, blankets, bags, or other projects. Bronto measures approximately 3 inches across and 3 inches tall, while Steggy is approximately 4 inches across and 2 inches tall when worked with worsted weight yarn and a size H/5mm crochet hook. These charming dino-themed pieces combine playful design with accessible crochet techniques.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. Construction begins with an adjustable ring, a technique that allows for seamless starting points in amigurumi-style projects. The designs utilize basic shaping methods to create dimensional, three-dimensional forms. Pieces are worked in continuous rounds and rows, building structure through strategic increases and decreases. The pattern incorporates common crochet construction methods for creating applique elements that can be attached to larger projects or worn as standalone pieces.

Stitches and Abbreviations

The pattern uses the following essential crochet stitches:

  • Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch for creating base loops
  • Single Crochet (sc) – a short, tight stitch used for shaping and structure
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) – a medium-height stitch providing balanced fabric density
  • Double Crochet (dc) – a taller stitch used for varied texture and drape
  • Slip Stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and connecting pieces
  • Adjustable Ring (adj) – the starting technique for creating seamless centers

Understanding these fundamental stitches and their abbreviations is essential for following the pattern successfully.

Materials and Tools Required

To complete this project, you will need crochet hooks in two sizes: H/5mm and G/4.75mm, or any hook size that works well with your chosen yarn. The pattern calls for small amounts of worsted weight yarn in multiple colors to create the dinosaur designs and add visual interest. The designer used I Love This Yarn by Hobby Lobby in the following colors: Yellow, Red, Grape, Peacock, Jelly Bean, and Royal.

Additional supplies include scissors for cutting yarn and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembling pieces. The pattern notes that beads for eyes and embellishments are optional, allowing crafters to customize their dinosaurs with realistic or whimsical details according to personal preference.
