Product Description
I designed this tiny skirt for Bronte.
This tiny skirt is designed to be knit flat. Usually, I specialize in one piece knitting with minimal seaming but I felt this skirt needed the structure of two side seams.
The borders are moss stitch.
The triangles can be knit in several bright contrasting colours or just one. The triangles are constructed using short rows, just follow the pattern line by line!
Don’t panic over the w&t, Cat Bordhi explains wraps and turns, on youtube.

Bronte's Tiny Skirt by JaneTerzzaDesigns
Project Overview
Bronte's Tiny Skirt is a charming knitted skirt designed for infants and toddlers, available in four size options ranging from 6 to 36 months. This intermediate-level knitting project is worked flat from side to side, offering a unique construction method that creates a structured garment with intentional seaming details.
What Is Being Made
This is a fitted infant and toddler skirt featuring moss stitch borders and optional contrasting triangular color work sections. The skirt is designed with two side seams for structure and stability, departing from the designer's typical preference for minimal-seaming, one-piece construction. The garment is sized to fit waists ranging from 18 inches (46 centimeters) for the smallest size up to 30 inches (76 centimeters) for the largest size, with corresponding skirt lengths from approximately 9 inches (23 centimeters) to 14 inches (36 centimeters).
Knitting Techniques Used
- Flat knitting construction: The skirt is knit flat from side to side rather than in the round, which influences shaping and seam placement
- Wrap and turn (w&t): This short-row shaping technique is employed to create the skirt's structure and fit. The designer recommends consulting video tutorials for detailed instruction on this technique
- Moss stitch borders: Decorative borders frame the skirt using this textured stitch pattern
- Contrasting color work: Optional triangular sections can be knitted in bright contrasting colors or a single yarn choice, allowing for creative customization
- Seaming: Two side seams are deliberately incorporated to provide structure, representing a deliberate design choice for this particular garment
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k): The fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl stitch (p): Used in combination with knit stitches to create the moss stitch texture
- Moss stitch: A textured stitch pattern created by alternating knit and purl stitches, used for the skirt's borders
- Wrap and turn (w&t): A short-row technique that creates shaping without increasing or decreasing stitches
Materials and Gauge
Yarn: This project requires DK weight yarn in a total of 150 to 200 grams depending on the size selected. The designer encourages using odd balls of contrasting yarn for the optional triangular color sections, making this an excellent project for yarn stash utilization.
Needles: 4mm circular or straight needles are required for this project.
Notions: Elastic is needed for the waist casing to ensure a secure, comfortable fit for active infants and toddlers.
Gauge and Sizing Information
Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches to 4 inches (10 centimeters) in width and 28 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) in length. Four size options are provided: Size 6/12 months, 12/18 months, 18/24 months, and 24/36 months, with cast-on stitch counts of 49, 57, 67, and 77 stitches respectively.
Design Notes
JaneTerzzaDesigns created Bronte's Tiny Skirt as a personalized design, originally made for someone named Bronte. The skirt represents a thoughtful departure from the designer's usual approach, incorporating deliberate seaming to provide the structured silhouette appropriate for a fitted children's garment. The optional use of multiple bright contrasting colors in the triangular sections adds visual interest and creative flexibility, while a single-color option provides a more subtle alternative.
