Broc Cushion by Ciara Ní Reachtnín
What Is Being Made
The Broc Cushion is a charming knitted badger cushion designed by Ciara Ní Reachtnín. This whimsical project creates a 40 cm (15.75") by 34 cm (13.5") square cushion featuring a badger motif, making it an engaging and decorative addition to any room. The design appeals to both children and adults, combining playful character design with functional home décor.
Construction Method
The cushion is worked using the intarsia knitting technique, which allows for the creation of the badger design using multiple colors within the knitted fabric. The front and back panels are knitted separately from the bottom up before being joined together. Once the two pieces are sewn together, the cushion is stuffed with toy filling to create a three-dimensional pillow. Additional character details are added through embroidery worked in contrasting yarn, and knitted ears are incorporated as a finishing element, adding dimension and personality to the finished piece.
Stitches and Techniques
This intermediate-level project primarily uses Stocking Stitch (also called stockinette stitch) as the main fabric base. The pattern employs the following abbreviations and techniques:
- K – Knit stitch
- P – Purl stitch
- St st – Stocking Stitch (alternating knit and purl rows)
- CO – Cast On
- Sl – Slip stitch
- Intarsia – Color work technique for creating the badger design
- Embroidery – Added with contrasting yarn for facial features and details
Yarn and Materials
The Broc Cushion is worked in Aran weight yarn, though the pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights including DK, Heavy Worsted, and Worsted options. The recommended yarn is Studio Donegal Donegal Aran Tweed, a 100% wool yarn offered in 88-yard (80-meter) skeins of 50 grams each.
Color requirements:
- 4843 Aubergine – Main Color (MC), 4 balls
- Báinín – Contrast Color 1 (CC1), 1 ball
- 4847 Teal – Contrast Color 2 (CC2), 1 ball
Needles and notions:
- 4.5 mm (US size 7) needles – available in straight or circular format according to preference
- Tapestry needle for seaming and embroidery
- Toy stuffing for cushion filling
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 16 stitches by 16 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in Stocking Stitch using 4.5 mm needles, measured after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for the cushion to reach its intended finished size of 40 cm by 34 cm square.
Care Instructions
The completed Broc Cushion requires hand washing only. After washing, the piece should be reshaped while wet and allowed to dry, which helps maintain the blocked dimensions and ensures the cushion retains its intended shape and appearance.
