Product Description
The Briony Pullover is a top-down, stranded colorwork sweater with flowy, oversized sleeves. The garment is meant to be worn with 1-2 inches of positive ease in the bust and 0-2 inches of negative ease at the ribbed waist. This pattern can be knit with a DK or Light Worsted yarn for the MC. I used oversized needles and DK yarn to create the SQUISHIEST darn sweater you ever did feel! Have fun with this one, and don’t be afraid to go extreme with your ribbing (size down those needles) and create a beautifully shaped sweater that is gonna help you rock that bod!

What Is Being Made
The Briony Pullover is a downloadable knitting pattern for a women's pullover sweater designed by Born & Raised Knits. This intermediate-level project features a yoke construction worked in the round, making it an ideal choice for knitters with some experience looking to expand their colorwork skills. The pattern includes nine different sizes to accommodate various fit preferences.
Yarn Requirements
This pattern uses two distinct yarns from Spectrum Fibre to create visual interest through contrasting weights and colors:
- Main Color (MC): 'Mermaid Song' in DK weight, ranging from 580 yards for the smallest size to 1,120 yards for the largest size (approximately 530 to 1,024 meters)
- Contrast Color (CC): 'Lagoon' in laceweight held double, ranging from 160 yards for the smallest size to 545 yards for the largest size (approximately 146 to 498 meters)
The use of laceweight yarn held double for the contrast color creates a unique textural element while maintaining compatibility with the DK weight main yarn.
Needles and Notions
The Briony Pullover requires multiple needle sizes to accommodate different sections of the garment:
- US Size 4/3.5 mm needles in 16-inch and 9-inch lengths for ribbed edgings
- US Size 6/4 mm needles in 16-inch length for initial yoke work
- US Size 8-10/5-6 mm needles in 24-32 inch lengths for the body and main construction
Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a beginning-of-round (BOR) marker to identify the start of circular knitting.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Stranded Colorwork (Fairisle Knitting): The primary technique featured in this pattern is stranded colorwork, also known as Fairisle knitting, worked in the round. This traditional method involves carrying both yarn colors across the inside of the fabric while knitting, creating intricate two-color patterns. Working in the round eliminates the need to purl, allowing for consistent tension and easier colorwork execution.
Ribbing: The pattern incorporates 4-inch ribbed sections, typically used for cuffs, waistband, and neckline edgings. Ribbing provides elasticity and helps the garment maintain its shape during wear and washing.
Yoke Construction: The sweater is constructed using a top-down yoke method, which allows for easy customization of length and provides opportunities to try on the garment during the knitting process. The yoke features the stranded colorwork patterning before transitioning to stockinette stitch for the body.
Left Lifted Increase (LLI): This shaping technique is used during yoke construction to increase stitches for proper garment fit and silhouette.
Pattern Details
The Briony Pullover pattern provides sizing options ranging from size 1 through size 9, offering flexibility for different body measurements. The yoke section is worked over approximately 20 rounds before transitioning to the body. The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and instructions for executing all necessary stitches and techniques.
