Product Description

This is a different type of pumpkin which is quick to make and has a cute two colour effect due to the use of the brioche crochet technique ( also known as overlay crochet)

It is a bit harder in some ways than the average pumpkin as you are working alternate rounds with two colours, however there is no side seam, nor do you need to gather the bottom like typical pumpkin patterns, plus the brioche texture looks very effective and is a bit different!

Level- Intermediate or adventurous beginner

Mostly written /photo tutorial pattern with a short video showing rounds 3 - 5

Yarn- use scraps of any stash yarn really as different types of yarn will result in a group of different sized pumpkins great for display!

Brioche Two Colour Pumpkin Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

This is a decorative crochet pumpkin created using the brioche crochet technique with two contrasting colours. The finished piece is a three-dimensional stuffed pumpkin suitable for seasonal decorations or autumn-themed displays. The pumpkin is constructed by building up layers of crochet fabric that are then gathered at the centre to create the characteristic pumpkin shape.

Brioche Crochet Technique

The brioche crochet method is the defining technique used throughout this pattern. Brioche crochet works with two distinct layers of fabric that are initially created separately, then pulled together using specialised stitches. This creates a unique textured appearance with depth and dimension that distinguishes brioche work from traditional crochet methods.

The pattern begins with a magic ring and single crochet stitches to establish the foundation. Rounds 1 to 3 involve building the two layers independently, which are the most technically demanding sections of the project. From round 4 onwards, the layers are pulled together using front post double crochet stitches, which draw through stitches from the underneath layer to create the brioche effect. Rounds 3 and 4 are identified as the most challenging stages, with video guidance provided to support these critical steps.

After the initial complex rounds, the pattern settles into a repeating sequence of alternating colours worked in rounds that gradually form a cup shape. The two-colour alternation adds visual interest while maintaining consistent stitch patterns throughout the middle and upper sections of the pumpkin.

Stitches Used

  • Single crochet (sc) – used to establish the foundation round from the magic ring
  • Front post double crochet – the key stitch used from round 4 onwards to pull the two layers together and create the brioche texture

Materials and Yarn Weight

This pattern is worked in DK weight yarn, which provides an appropriate thickness for creating a pumpkin with good structure and definition. Two contrasting colours are required to achieve the brioche two-colour effect, with colours alternated throughout the rounds. A crochet hook appropriate for DK weight yarn is needed, along with fibrefill stuffing to fill the completed pumpkin before gathering the opening closed.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the brioche crochet technique requires more skill than basic crochet projects, the pattern is designed to be learnable. The most challenging aspects are concentrated in rounds 3 and 4, where the two layers are first brought together. Once these foundational rounds are completed, the pattern becomes more straightforward, consisting of repeated rounds with alternating colours. The inclusion of video guidance for the difficult rounds supports crafters in mastering this technique.

Pattern Credit

This pattern was designed by Fran Mori and is inspired by the brioche crochet techniques developed and shared by LillaBjorn Crochet, whose free patterns serve as educational resources for learning this specialised crochet method.
