Product Description
Brioche infinity scarves seem to be very popular these days (at least here in Iceland), but why buy a commercially made scarf when you can easily knit one? This is a very easy, fun and quick project and the pattern is free. If you can't find the yarns specified, I recommend using any 1 ply and/or unspun worsted or aran weight yarn. Soft merino wool or alpaca is perfect. The scarf uses 2 skeins of either linked yarn.
UPDATE: The pattern is now available in Spanish thanks to hannafcs.
Brioche Infinity Scarf by Unneva
What Is Being Made
The Brioche Infinity Scarf is a one-size cowl-style accessory designed to be worn as a continuous loop around the neck. This knitted scarf measures approximately 120-150 cm in length, creating a luxuriously soft and fluffy infinity-style garment that combines comfort with elegant drape.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project is created using the knitting technique, worked in the round-adjacent method of knitting back and forth before joining. The scarf is constructed using the brioche stitch, a specialized knitting technique that creates a highly elastic, textured fabric with excellent recovery and a distinctive appearance. The brioche method involves yarn overs and slipped stitches that work together to produce the characteristic puffy, reversible texture. The finished piece is then grafted or seamed together at the ends to form the infinity loop.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is the brioche stitch, which is worked in a two-row repeat pattern:
- Row 1: Yarn over, slip 1 purlwise, knit 1 — repeated across the row
- Row 2: Yarn over, slip 1 purlwise, knit 2 together — repeated across the row
Row 2 is repeated throughout the body of the scarf until approximately 50 cm of yarn remains. The brioche stitch creates a reversible fabric with excellent elasticity, making it ideal for infinity scarves that require comfortable stretch and recovery.
Materials and Tools
This pattern accommodates two yarn weight options to suit different preferences and stash materials:
- Abuelita Merino Worsted: 2 skeins — a worsted-weight merino option
- Fyberspates Scrumptious DK: 2 skeins — a DK-weight alternative
Needles required are size 10-11 US or 6-8 mm. The pattern specifically recommends using the larger needle size rather than the smaller size to achieve the desired soft and fluffy texture characteristic of brioche knitting. Gauge is not critical for this project, allowing for flexibility in needle selection based on personal preference and desired fabric hand.
Pattern Details and Sizing
The scarf is worked in one size with adjustable width options. Cast on 40-46 stitches depending on desired scarf width, with the final length measuring 120-150 cm based on stitch count and needle size used. The pattern requires grafting or seaming the cast-on and bind-off edges together to complete the infinity loop, utilizing all remaining yarn in the final 50 cm.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore specialized stitch techniques. While brioche stitch requires understanding of yarn overs and slipped stitches, the two-row repeat becomes intuitive with practice, and the forgiving nature of the stitch makes it an excellent introduction to brioche knitting.
