Brassica Sweater Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
The Brassica Sweater is an advanced crochet pattern designed by annelies baes for creating a structured pullover sweater. This downloadable PDF pattern is available in five sizes: Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large, and 2XL, making it accessible for a wide range of body measurements. The sweater features a distinctive design element where the front panels overlap at the hem, creating a unique silhouette and visual interest at the garment's base.
Construction Techniques
This sweater is constructed using a modular approach that minimizes finishing work. The front and back body pieces are crocheted separately as flat panels, then seamed together using a tapestry needle. Once the body is complete, both sleeves are worked in the round directly onto the body using circular crochet techniques, eliminating the need for additional seaming at the armholes. This method reduces finishing time while maintaining structural integrity and professional appearance.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Brassica Sweater employs a lovely structured stitch pattern that creates visual texture and definition throughout the garment. The pattern includes multiple crochet charts that detail the stitch sequences for different sections of the sweater. For the body sections, the gauge is measured at 3 motifs wide by 11 rows equaling 10 x 10 centimeters when worked with a 3.75 millimeter crochet hook. The sleeves utilize treble crochet stitches (abbreviated as tr), with a gauge of 19 trebles by 11 rows measuring 10 x 10 centimeters using a 3.5 millimeter hook. The pattern uses UK crochet terminology throughout, and a complete list of stitches and abbreviations is provided within the PDF.
Yarn and Materials
The recommended yarn for the Brassica Sweater is Durable Cosy extra fine, a durable blend composed of 58 percent cotton and 42 percent acrylic. This fiber content creates a breathable, washable garment suitable for various seasons. Each 50-gram ball yields 180 meters or 197 yards of yarn. For the five sizes, yarn requirements range from 8 balls for size Small to 13 balls for size 2XL. If you prefer to extend the sleeves to full length rather than the standard length shown in the pattern, you will need an additional 1 to 2 balls of yarn depending on your chosen size.
The pattern specifies crochet hooks in sizes 3.75, 3.5, 3.25, and 3 millimeters, with hook selection depending on your size and the section being worked. Additional materials needed include scissors, a ruler for measuring gauge and finished dimensions, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, pins for holding pieces in place during assembly, and a blocking mat to shape and set the finished sweater.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is designated as advanced, making it suitable for experienced crocheters who are comfortable reading crochet charts, working with multiple hook sizes, and managing garment construction techniques such as seaming and working in the round.
