Branch Crochet Applique Pattern by Kerri's Crochet
What Is Being Made
The Branch pattern is a crochet applique design created by independent designer Kerri's Crochet. This project produces a delicate decorative branch suitable for embellishing garments, accessories, or home décor items. The design is inspired by natural branches and can be customized to feature robin or blue wren bird appliques, making it a versatile addition to various crochet projects. The finished applique functions as a standalone decorative element that can be sewn onto finished pieces.
Techniques Used
This crochet applique pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques accessible to beginners. The construction involves creating the branch structure using basic chain stitches as a foundation, followed by working subsequent rows or rounds using standard crochet stitches. The pattern utilizes slip stitches for joining and shaping, while various crochet stitch heights create texture and definition throughout the design. After crocheting the branch component, the pattern incorporates hand-sewing techniques to attach decorative elements such as flowers or berries to the finished branch structure using sewing thread and a needle. Optional beadwork can enhance the floral centers, adding dimensional detail to the applique.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) - forms the foundation and base structure of the branch
- Slip stitch (sl st) - used for joining and shaping throughout the pattern
- Double crochet (dc) - a fundamental stitch creating dense fabric
- Half treble crochet (htr) - provides medium height and texture variation
- Treble crochet (tr) - creates taller stitches for dimensional effects
- Double treble crochet (dtr) - the tallest stitch in the pattern, adding height and airiness
Materials and Tools
The Branch pattern is designed to work with lace weight crochet cotton or wool yarn. The designer used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat 2 ply crochet cotton in three coordinating colors: (162) Black Coffee for the branch base, (390) Poppy Rose for floral elements, and (606) Grass Green for foliage details. A 1mm crochet hook is recommended for the small branch version using 2 ply cotton, while a 1.5mm hook works with 4 ply crochet cotton for the medium branch size. Additional materials include scissors for cutting yarn, a darning needle for weaving in loose ends, sewing thread and a sewing needle for attaching flowers or berries to the completed branch, and optional small beads to embellish flower centers for added visual interest.
Size Options
The pattern offers two finished size variations. The small branch, worked with 2 ply crochet cotton and a 1mm hook, measures 10.5cm x 5cm (4" x 2"). The medium branch, created using 4 ply crochet cotton with a 1.5mm hook, measures 14cm x 6.5cm (5.5" x 2.75"). These compact dimensions make the applique suitable for placement on garments, small accessories, or as decorative embellishments on larger projects.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for crocheters new to applique work or those developing their foundational skills. The straightforward stitch combinations and clear abbreviations support accessible learning, while the optional video tutorial available on Kerri's Crochet YouTube channel provides additional visual guidance for pattern execution.
