Product Description
On the heels of creating my version of the Braided & Ribbed 2-in-1 Beanie, I decided to create the matching cowl because I love a matching set … LOL!
This Cowl is what I called a ‘transitional’ piece as it is ideal for wearing in between seasons, or on those cool summer nights when you want a little added warmth. I am always cold, so it seems perfectly normal to have a cowl or hat on hand at any given time.
I used approximately 115 yards [105 meters] of Hayfield Bonus Aran w/Wool in the Maize colourway.

Project Overview
The Braided & Ribbed 2-in-1 Cowl is a crocheted transitional accessory designed by Gloria Miller as a matching companion piece to the Braided & Ribbed 2-in-1 Beanie. This cowl is ideal for wearing between seasons or during cool summer nights when additional warmth is desired without the bulk of heavier winter wear. The finished cowl measures 11.5 inches wide by 6 inches tall and is sized to fit most adults.
Craft & Techniques
This project is created using the crochet technique and is rated at an advanced beginner skill level. The pattern employs a combination of braided and ribbed stitch patterns to create visual texture and dimensional interest. The use of back bump stitches—working into the back loop only of previous rows—is a key technique that produces the ribbed effect characteristic of this design. The braided element adds structural definition and a sophisticated appearance suitable for a transitional piece.
Stitches Used
- Chain (CH) – The foundation stitch created by yarning over and pulling through
- Single Crochet, Back Bump (SC BB) – Single crochet worked into the back loop only, creating vertical ribbing
- Double Crochet, Back Bump (DC BB) – Double crochet worked into the back loop only for additional texture variation
Materials & Tools
This cowl is worked in worsted weight yarn, specifically approximately 115 yards (105 meters) of Hayfield Bonus Aran w/Wool in the Maize colourway. A 6.0mm crochet hook is used throughout the project. Additional materials include scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends. The pattern provides both US and UK crochet terminology, accommodating international crocheters.
Gauge & Sizing
The gauge for this pattern is established over the first 5 rows, with 7 stitches per row equaling 2 inches. Maintaining proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions of 11.5 inches wide by 6 inches tall. The cowl is designed in one-size-fits-most for adult wear, making it a versatile accessory for most head and neck sizes.
