What is Being Made

The Boyfriend cardigan is a relaxed-fit button-front cardigan designed by VERSACIKNITS in nine sizes ranging from XS to 5X. This garment features a classic menswear-inspired silhouette with 3–4 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, oversized wear. The finished chest measurements range from 32¾ inches in the XS size up to 65½ inches in the 5X size, with lengths varying between 22½ and 24 inches depending on the size selected. The cardigan is finished with seven buttons for closure.

Techniques Used

The Boyfriend cardigan employs a bottom-up construction method, with the fronts, back, and sleeves worked separately as individual pieces. After each component is completed, the pieces are blocked to shape and then seamed together for a polished finish. Stitches are subsequently picked up along the front edges and neckline, allowing the knitter to work the front band in one continuous operation. This modular approach makes the project manageable and allows for precise shaping and fit adjustments before final assembly.

Materials

Yarn: The pattern calls for Madelinetosh Tosh DK, a superwash merino wool yarn composed of 100% merino fiber. Each skein contains 225 yards and weighs 100 grams. The yardage requirement ranges from approximately 1,085 yards for the XS size to 2,165 yards for the 5X size, translating to 5–10 skeins depending on the size being knitted. The sample shown in the pattern is worked in the colorway cherry.

Needles and Notions: U.S. Size 6 (4mm) straight needles and circular needles are required, or whatever size is necessary to achieve the specified gauge. Stitch markers or waste yarn are needed to mark pattern repeats and construction points. Seven buttons are required for closure if the cardigan is to be fully buttoned.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 29 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when measured in Stockinette Stitch and Lozenge Stitch after blocking. Checking gauge before beginning the project is strongly recommended to ensure proper fit and finished measurements.
