Product Description

(Patron en FR inclus)

What’s this: This is the Boxed In – Boat neck pullover, created in collaboration with WeCrochet for Stitch n Hustle’s Perfect Picot Blog Hop.

Why should I make this: Chroma Twist Worsted is an amazing yarn to work with, and this pullover uses it beautifully in a simple pattern perfect for layering and decorated with a pretty picot trim.

When will this get the most use: All through the layering seasons (ie the most wonderful time of the year).

Who is it for: Instructions are given for sizes XS to 5X, with tips on how to lengthen the pullover or adjust the neckline.

Where do I start: This pattern is rated Easy - you’ll need to know or be eager to learn the basic crochet stitches and colour changing. You will need between 600 and 1400 yards of Worsted weight yarn (I used Chroma Twist Worsted by WeCrochet in colourway Sedona) and a 5.5mm hook. Other notions: 6x 1 in/2.5 cm buttons, a yarn needle and some stitch markers.

Boxed In Boat Neck Pullover by ACCROchet

What is Being Made

The Boxed In is a crochet pullover sweater featuring a classic boat neck design. This garment is worked as a structured top suitable for everyday wear, with a construction method that builds the piece systematically from the back panel upward. The design is available in nine sizes ranging from X-Small through 5X, making it accessible to a wide range of body types and measurements.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is a crochet design classified as beginner-level difficulty, making it an excellent choice for those new to garment construction. The pattern uses fundamental crochet techniques that build foundational skills without requiring advanced shaping methods or complex stitch combinations. The straightforward approach allows crafters to focus on gauge accuracy and basic stitch execution while creating a wearable, finished garment.

Stitches Used

The Boxed In pullover employs essential crochet stitches that form the foundation of most garment patterns:

  • Extended Single Crochet (Esc) — a taller variation of single crochet that creates a denser, more structured fabric suitable for a fitted pullover
  • Foundation Single Crochet (Fsc) — an efficient method for creating the initial chain and first row simultaneously, eliminating the need for a separate foundation chain
  • Back Loop Only (Blo) — a technique that creates textured ridges by working into only the back loop of stitches, adding visual interest to the finished piece

These stitches work together to create a cohesive fabric with consistent texture and structure throughout the garment.

Materials and Specifications

The recommended yarn for this project is Chroma Twist Worsted by WeCrochet in the colorway Sedona. This yarn is composed of 70% superwash wool and 30% nylon, offering durability and easy care. Each skein contains 100 grams of yarn with 198 yards (181 meters) of yardage. Depending on the size being made, the pattern requires between 3 and 7 skeins, with smaller sizes needing fewer skeins and larger sizes (3X through 5X) requiring the maximum yardage.

A 5.5mm crochet hook is used to work with the worsted weight yarn. Additional notions include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and six 1-inch (2.5cm) buttons for finishing details. The pattern references ACCROchet's website for specific button options that coordinate with the design.

Gauge and Fit

The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches and 12 rows measuring 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in the pattern stitch. Achieving accurate gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly in a fitted pullover design. The pattern provides clear instructions for checking gauge and adjusting hook size accordingly — using a smaller hook to tighten gauge or a larger hook to loosen it. A detailed size chart is included in the full pattern to help crafters select the appropriate starting chain length and understand finished measurements across all nine available sizes.
