Boulevard Headwrap by Meghan Fernandes

What is Being Made

The Boulevard Headwrap is a knitted headband accessory designed as a beginner-friendly project. This piece combines a main headband with an attached decorative flower embellishment, creating a stylish wrap suitable for casual wear. The finished headwrap features a gathered, textured appearance achieved through a simple construction method that results in a dimensional, sculptural quality.

Techniques Used

This knitting project employs fundamental techniques appropriate for beginners. The construction begins with a long tail cast on, establishing the foundation stitches for the headband. The main body uses a straightforward slip stitch edge technique, where stitches are slipped at the beginning of each row to create a neat, finished edge. The headband is then seamed together using a yarn needle, with the seaming method deliberately creating puckering and gathering in the fabric for visual interest. The flower component is created by rolling a knitted strip into a dimensional shape and securing it with hand stitching, demonstrating how simple construction methods can produce sculptural effects.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch — the primary stitch throughout both the headband and flower components, created by alternating knit and purl rows
  • Slip stitch — used at the edge of each row (slipped purlwise on purl rows, slipped knitwise on knit rows) to create a polished selvage edge
  • Bind off — used to secure stitches at the completion of both the headband and flower pieces

Materials

The Boulevard Headwrap requires 1 ball of Rowan Kid Classic yarn in an aran weight. This luxury blend consists of 70% lambswool, 26% kid mohair, and 4% nylon, with each ball providing 140 meters (153 yards) of yardage. The project calls for 6.5 mm knitting needles, a yarn needle for seaming and finishing, and a measuring tape for checking dimensions. The recommended gauge is 16 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, ensuring proper fit and drape for the finished headwrap.

Project Specifications

This is a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for knitters of beginner difficulty level. The headband measures 17 inches in length before seaming, with 27 stitches cast on. The decorative flower element measures 7.5 inches before being rolled and attached. The aran weight yarn and straightforward stitch patterns make this an accessible introduction to garment construction and finishing techniques.
