Product Description

The Borealis Socks are the final instalment of the Aurora collection, 3 patterns that have being designed to raise money and awareness for 3 charities that have become close to my heart. Inspired by the northern lights, the Borealis socks feature a sweeping cable design up the front of the sock reminiscent of the lights travelling across the night sky.

In sizes for all the family, knit in Doulton Border Leicester 4ply, these socks are knit from the cuff-down using a heel flap and gusset. This beautiful cable design is used on the adult socks, with a more simple version of the cable used for the smaller sizes. The cable runs up the front with the rest of the sock knit in stocking stitch. Sample is knit in the ‘Saltholme’ colourway.

Borealis Socks by Su Sayer

What is Being Made

The Borealis Socks are a top-down knitted sock design inspired by the Northern Lights. This intermediate-level knitting project features an elegant cable pattern that runs down the front of the sock, creating a visual representation of the Aurora Borealis with its undulating colored lights dancing across the night sky. The pattern includes multiple size options to accommodate various foot dimensions.

Design Inspiration and Concept

Designer Su Sayer created the Borealis Socks as part of the Aurora collection, drawing inspiration from the magical spectacle of the Northern Lights. The four cables that travel down the front of each sock are specifically designed to imitate the movement and flow of the colored auroras shifting across the night sky, making this a thematically cohesive and visually striking sock design.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Borealis Socks are constructed using the top-down knitting method, which begins at the cuff and progresses toward the toe. This approach allows knitters to try on the sock as they work and easily adjust the length to personal preference. The primary technique featured in this design is cable knitting, which creates the dimensional, rope-like patterns that form the decorative element of the sock.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The pattern incorporates four cables that undulate down the front of the sock. Cable stitches are created by crossing groups of stitches over one another to produce raised, twisted patterns. The cables in this design are worked to create a flowing, wave-like appearance that echoes the natural movement of the Aurora Borealis across the sky.

Yarn and Materials

The Borealis Socks are designed to be knitted with Doulton Border Leicester Worsted Spun 4ply yarn in the Saltholme colorway. This yarn is composed of 100% Border Leicester fiber, a premium wool known for its softness and durability. Each 100-gram skein provides 300 meters or 328 yards of yarn. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 95 to 201 meters (104 to 220 yards) for the smallest sizes, up to 246 to 386 meters (266 to 423 yards) for the largest sizes.

Needles and Notions

This pattern calls for 2.75 mm (US 2) circular needles measuring 86 centimeters or 34 inches in length. Alternatively, knitters may use double-pointed needles (DPNs) of the same gauge if preferred. Additional notions are required to complete the project, though specific details are referenced in the full pattern documentation.

Difficulty Level

The Borealis Socks are rated as an intermediate-level knitting project. This classification reflects the inclusion of cable work, which requires familiarity with cable techniques and the ability to read cable charts. Knitters should have foundational sock knitting experience, including comfort with working in the round and managing decreases for the heel and toe shaping.
