Product Description
This border can be used on any stitch count. All you need to make sure is you have corners on your project. It doesn't matter the number of corners either.
It can be done in any hook size and any yarn weight. Please use the yarn weight and hook size corresponding to and used for your project. Yardage needed may be vary if pattern is done different in different yarn weight.
The corners are important for this border. They are where the design comes in. The sides between each corner are just simple stitches. They add a bit to the design but are not the main feature of this border like the corners are.
This pattern is written assuming you have 4 corners.
Pattern is written in American Terms. If you have converted this pattern to any other language please let me know. I’d love to offer it to others if possible.
Border One Crochet Pattern by Jessica Phillips
What Is Being Made
Border One is a versatile crochet border design created by independent designer Jessica Phillips. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for crafting a decorative border that can be applied to any crochet project with corners. The border is designed with flexibility in mind, accommodating various stitch counts and corner configurations, making it suitable for finishing blankets, garments, afghans, and other crochet projects regardless of their dimensions or corner quantity.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet pattern employs several fundamental and advanced crochet techniques to create visual interest and texture. The border utilizes post stitches, which are worked around the post of stitches from previous rows rather than into the top loops, creating dimensional effects. The pattern also incorporates reverse crochet, commonly known as crab stitch, which creates a finished, rope-like edge. These techniques combine to produce a professional-looking border with depth and definition suitable for enhancing the edges of completed projects.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – Foundation and spacing stitches
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Joining and shaping
- Single crochet (sc) – Basic structure
- Back post single crochet (bpsc) – Textured post stitches
- Double crochet (dc) – Height and drape
- Back post double crochet (bpdc) – Dimensional post stitches
- Triple crochet (tr) – Extended height stitches
- Double triple crochet (dtr) – Tall, open stitches
- Reverse single crochet (rsc) – Crab stitch for finished edges
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for 3 to 4 ounces of worsted weight yarn distributed across three different colors (designated as CA, CB, and CC). The worsted weight yarn provides excellent stitch definition and is forgiving for intermediate crocheters. The pattern is adaptable to other yarn weights; crocheters should use yarn weight and yardage corresponding to their specific project requirements, as yardage needs may vary when using different yarn weights.
Tools: A size 5mm (H) crochet hook is recommended for standard worsted weight yarn, though the pattern accommodates hook size adjustments based on the yarn weight and project specifications. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing, and at least 8 stitch removable markers for tracking stitch placement and managing the border construction, particularly at corner points.
Pattern Flexibility
Border One is designed as a universally applicable border pattern that adapts to any crochet project with corners. The stitch count is flexible, and the pattern works regardless of the number of corners present on the project. This adaptability makes it an excellent choice for customizing various crochet items while maintaining consistent quality and appearance. Gauge is noted as not important for this pattern, allowing crocheters to focus on proper stitch placement and corner construction rather than precise tension measurements.
