Boogie Wonderland Top in Berroco Lumi — Crochet Pattern Summary

The Boogie Wonderland Top is a stylish crochet halter-style tank top designed by Mel Kennelly and worked in Berroco Lumi yarn. Published as a downloadable PDF and rated Intermediate in difficulty, this pattern produces a flirty, retro-inspired apron top constructed entirely from individual crochet motifs sewn together — making it a rewarding project for crocheters who are comfortable working in the round and assembling modular pieces.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a women's halter top — sometimes described as an apron top — featuring tie-back straps that allow for a wide range of fits. Because the straps are tied at the back, the fit is intentionally flexible, and the pattern accommodates a broad range of bust sizes across four size options:

  • XS/S: To fit bust 26–46" / 66–117 cm; finished bust width 26" / 66 cm; length 13" / 33 cm
  • M/L: To fit bust 39–59" / 99–160 cm; finished bust width 39" / 99 cm; length 13" / 33 cm
  • L/XL: To fit bust 45–65" / 114–165 cm; finished bust width 45" / 114 cm; length 16¼" / 41.5 cm
  • 2X/3X: To fit bust 58–78" / 147.5–198 cm; finished bust width 58" / 147.5 cm; length 16¼" / 41.5 cm

The sample shown in the pattern photography is worked in size XS/S. The generous size range within each category is a deliberate design feature, reflecting how the adjustable tie-back straps allow a single finished garment to fit many different body shapes comfortably.

Construction Method

The Boogie Wonderland Top is a motif-based construction — one of the most satisfying and portable approaches in crochet garment making. Rather than crocheting the body of the top in one continuous piece, the crocheter works a series of individual clover motifs and half clover motifs separately, then seams them together to form the finished garment. This modular method means you can work on individual squares anywhere and assemble them at the end.

Each full motif measures 4¾" / 12 cm square and 6¾" / 17 cm on the diagonal after blocking. Gauge is measured after blocking, which is an important step for ensuring the motifs join neatly and the finished top drapes correctly. Crocheters are strongly encouraged to make a gauge swatch and block it before beginning the full project.

The pattern provides both written directions and charts for working the motifs, giving crocheters the flexibility to choose whichever format they find clearest.

Techniques Used

  • Motif construction: Working individual clover motifs and half clover motifs in the round
  • Modular assembly: Sewing completed motifs together to form the garment body
  • Colorwork: Using three colors of Berroco Lumi within the motif design
  • Blocking: Essential for achieving accurate motif dimensions and a polished finish
  • Reading crochet charts: Optional but available alongside written instructions
  • Seaming: Joining motifs by sewing to construct the halter/apron top silhouette

Stitches Used

  • Half double crochet (hdc) — a foundational stitch used throughout the motifs
  • Hdc3tog (Half double crochet 3 together) — a special decrease stitch defined in the pattern; worked by drawing up loops in three consecutive stitches and completing them together, creating a neat cluster decrease that shapes the clover motif petals

The hdc3tog decrease is central to the clover motif's distinctive shape. By
