Product Description
This unisex blanket uses a fun bobble design to create a textured blanket that’s easy to knit and sure to keep baby cosy. Instructions are given for 3 sizes and the border is worked as part of the main pattern, so there’s no sewing involved. I used Hayfield Bonus Aran with wool. The pattern will work to any other yarn of your choice, but please check the tension and yardage carefully
The blanket is worked all in one and instructions are given for three sizes, making it ideal for a car seat, buggy or Moses basket: 63 x 66 cm (25 x 26”), 75 x 76 cm (29.5 x 30”) and 87 x 86 cm (34 x 34”)
You will need 5mm needles and approx. 250g (575yds/525m), 350g (805yds/735m), 450g (1035yds/945m) of yarn.

What is Being Made
The Bobbing Along is an unisex baby blanket featuring a textured bobble stitch design. This downloadable knitting pattern offers three finished size options to suit different needs: Small (63 x 66 cm / 25 x 26"), Medium (75 x 76 cm / 29.5 x 30"), and Large (87 x 86 cm / 34 x 34"). The blanket is designed to be both visually appealing and practical for keeping babies warm and cosy.
Pattern Construction and Design Features
The Bobbing Along blanket uses a fun bobble design throughout to create texture and visual interest. A key feature of this pattern is that the border is worked as an integral part of the main pattern, eliminating the need for separate seaming or sewing. This integrated construction method makes the project more straightforward and reduces finishing work.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginners. The primary stitch technique employed is the bobble stitch, which creates raised, textured bumps across the fabric surface. Bobble stitches are created by working multiple stitches into a single stitch and then decreasing them back down, producing distinctive three-dimensional details. The border integration means these bobble techniques are worked continuously throughout the piece rather than added afterward.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The pattern is designed for Aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works well for creating defined stitch definition, particularly with textured stitches like bobbles. The designer used Hayfield Bonus Aran with wool for the original sample. Yarn quantities vary by size:
- Small: 250g (575 yards / 525m)
- Medium: 350g (805 yards / 735m)
- Large: 450g (1035 yards / 945m)
The pattern is adaptable to other Aran weight yarns of your choice, though the designer recommends carefully checking tension and yardage requirements when substituting yarns to ensure proper finished dimensions.
Tools and Notions
The pattern requires 5mm knitting needles (one pair) and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends. The designer provides a helpful tip to avoid visible loose ends at the blanket edges: change to a new ball of yarn on the inside edge of the border rather than weaving in ends at the outer edges where they would be more noticeable.
Care and Finishing Notes
The designer recommends tying the finished blanket inside a pillowcase before washing and then drying it flat. This protective method helps the blanket maintain its shape and texture during the washing process, preserving the definition of the bobble stitches and overall dimensions.
