Bobbi Bonnet & Scarf – Knitting Pattern for Babies by Debbie Bliss
This charming beginner-friendly knitting pattern by Debbie Bliss includes instructions for two coordinating baby accessories: a Bobbi Bonnet and a matching Scarf, both worked in the soft and luxurious Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran yarn. Designed for little ones aged 12–24 months and 24–36 months, the set makes a delightful handmade gift or a cosy everyday accessory for babies and toddlers. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, making it easy to access and print at home.
The Bobbi Bonnet
The bonnet is a classic baby hat worked flat and seamed to create its structured shape. It features a ribbed brim for a neat, snug fit around a baby's head, transitioning into a textured moss stitch body that gives the bonnet its charming, tactile appearance. Short-row shaping is used to create the rounded back of the hat, adding a professional finish without complex construction. Ties are worked separately to fasten the bonnet securely under the chin.
The bonnet is knitted in two colours from the Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran range:
- Mustard 66 (A) – 1 ball for the 12–24 month size, 2 balls for the 24–36 month size
- Baby Pink 603 (B) – 1 ball for both sizes
Needles required for the bonnet are a pair of 4.5mm (US 7) knitting needles for the ribbed sections and a pair of 5mm (US 8) knitting needles for the main body. The correct tension is 18 stitches and 32 rows to 10cm over moss stitch using 5mm needles, so swatching is recommended even for beginners.
The Scarf
The matching scarf is also worked flat in two colours, using the same ribbed and moss stitch techniques as the bonnet for a cohesive look across the set. It is sized to suit both age ranges, with finished measurements of 10(12)cm wide and 80(84)cm long, excluding the pompoms. The pompoms are a fun finishing detail, added at each end of the scarf using a 4.5cm pompom maker.
The scarf uses Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino (rather than the Cashmerino Aran used for the hat), keeping it lightweight and soft against a baby's delicate skin:
- Mustard 66 (A) – 1 ball for both sizes
- Baby Pink 603 (B) – 1 ball for the 12–24 month size, 2 balls for the 24–36 month size
Needles required for the scarf are a pair of 4.5mm (US 7) and a pair of 5mm (US 8) knitting needles, plus a 4.5cm pompom maker for the finishing touches.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent project for those who are relatively new to knitting but have a handle on the basics. The techniques and stitches featured across both designs include:
- Moss stitch – the primary stitch pattern for the main body of both accessories, creating a lovely textured fabric
- 2x2 rib – used for the brim of the bonnet and the edges of the scarf, providing elasticity and a tidy finish
- Short-row shaping – used in the bonnet to shape the back of the hat, worked by turning mid-row and slipping stitches purlwise
- Working flat – both pieces are knitted back and forth on straight needles rather than in the round
- Seaming – the bonnet is assembled by joining seams after knitting
- Colour changes – the two-colour design involves cutting and joining yarn at designated points
