Blythe Winter Warmer Coat by Polly
Project Overview
The Blythe Winter Warmer Coat is a knitted garment designed by Polly for doll clothing, specifically created to fit Blythe dolls. This downloadable knitting pattern offers a beginner-friendly project that produces a charming winter coat with optional styling variations. The coat can be customized through yarn choice and finishing techniques to achieve different aesthetic effects and fit adjustments.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a fitted winter coat for Blythe dolls. The coat features a body knit in one piece to the armholes, with decreasing shaping to create a tailored silhouette. The design includes optional hood construction, and the pattern notes suggest that knitters can alternatively add a small collar similar to the designer's Blythe Magical Dreamcoats pattern. Additional customization options include adding a front zip closure for a more realistic coat appearance.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Blythe Winter Warmer Coat employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters. The garment begins with a moss stitch border, which creates a neat, textured edge. The body is constructed using strategic decreasing with knit-two-together (K2tog) stitches placed at specific intervals to shape the coat and create a more fitted silhouette. The pattern maintains moss stitch edging throughout the construction process, providing structural definition to the piece. The one-piece construction method simplifies assembly and creates a seamless garment from cast-on to armhole shaping.
Stitches Used
- Moss Stitch: Created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a K1, P1 pattern, worked over multiple rows to establish textured borders and edge details
- Knit Stitch (K): The primary stitch forming the main fabric of the coat body
- Purl Stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches for moss stitch pattern and selective shaping rows
- Knit Two Together (K2tog): A decrease stitch used strategically throughout the pattern to shape the coat and reduce stitch count at specific shaping points
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Blythe Winter Warmer Coat is designed to be knitted with 4.5mm needles and aran weight yarn. The pattern accommodates multiple yarn options to suit different preferences and desired outcomes. Suitable yarns include mohair, standard aran weight yarn, and Noro Kureyon, which is a variegated wool yarn known for its color variations.
The choice of yarn significantly affects both the appearance and fit of the finished coat. When knitted in mohair, the coat drapes loosely on the doll, creating a soft, fluffy aesthetic. Alternatively, if knitters select a pure wool yarn such as Noro or another quality wool option, the coat can be felted after knitting, resulting in a more snug, tailored fit. This felting option provides crafters with the flexibility to achieve either a relaxed or fitted silhouette depending on their yarn selection and finishing choices.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as beginner difficulty, making it an accessible project for knitters new to doll clothing or those developing their fundamental skills. The straightforward construction method, basic stitch repertoire, and clear shaping instructions provide an ideal introduction to fitted garment knitting on a small scale.
